국문 초록

본 논문은 14-16세기 초 잉글랜드에 정착한 저지대 출신 여성 이주민들의 다양한 경제활동을 통해 다층적 이주 양상을 검토한다. 이 시기 저지대 지역에서는 정치적 갈등과 대립으로 인한 혼란, 주력 산업이었던 직물업의 트렌드 변화로 인해 고향을 떠나는 이들이 있었다. 이들이 새로운 고향으로 선택했던 잉글랜드는 흑사병으로 인한 사회변화 속에서 소비자 경제로 진입했고, 시장 확대와 제조업의 성장으로 이주민에게 경제적 기회를 제공했다. 숙련된 수공업자와 노동력에 대한 수요는 남성에게뿐만 아니라 이주민 여성에게도 일정 부분의 기회를 제공했다. 유럽의 다른 지역 출신에 비해 가족 단위로 이주해온 경향이 있었던 저지대 지역 출신 여성들은 남편, 가족과 함께 수공업에 종사하는 경우가 많았다. 또한 경제주체로서 적극적으로 경제활동에 임하며 생활을 영위했다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the multi-layered patterns of migration through the diverse economic activities of female migrants from the Low Countries who settled in England between the 14th and early 16th centuries. During this period, political conflict and instability in the Low Countries, along with transformations in the textile industry—the region’s primary economic sector—led many to leave their homelands. England, having transitioned into a consumer economy in the aftermath of social changes brought about by the Black Death, emerged as an attractive destination for these migrants. The expansion of markets and the growth of manufacturing created economic opportunities, not only for men but also, to a certain extent, for migrant women. In contrast to migrants from other regions of Europe, women from the Low Countries often migrated with their families and worked alongside their husbands in artisanal industries. As economic agents, these women actively participated in local economies and maintained their livelihoods.
