국문 초록

전주 여성선교사들(29명)은, 선교사부인(15), 한국인 여성 대상 전도사역(5), 교육사역(4), 병원사역(5) 등의 분야로 나누어 활동하였다. 이들은 양질의 교육을 받아 교양과 문화적 소양 그리고 어느 정도의 전문성까지 갖춘 사람들이었다. 미국남장로교는 이들에게 활동의 물적 토대를 제공하였다. 그래서 한국 선교 현장에서도 본국에서와 같은 수준의 생활이 가능했다. 전주스테이션은 산하에 학교와 병원, 성경학교와 교회를 갖춘 대규모의 선교 복합 기관으로서, 전체의 원만한 운영을 위해서는 전문적인 사역자들의 참여가 필수적으로 요청되었다. 개별 여선교사 모두는 기능적인 면에서 분명한 역할을 갖고 있었던 스테이션 구성의 필수 요원들이었다. 전주 선교사 공동체 운영의 두드러진 특징은 강한 공공성이다. 전주 여성선교사들은 멀리는 선교본부와 선교부, 좁게는 전주 선교사 사회의 통제를 받으며 개인의 업무를 수행하는 위치에 놓여 있었다. 선교 대상 한국인들에 대한 개인의 자비심 발휘는 매우 제한적으로 이루어졌다. 전주 여성선교사들은 초월적인 구호(救護)의 존재들이 아니라 피선교지 현장에 잘 적응한, 기능성과 효율성 기반의 전문 또는 반(半)전문 직업인 집단이었다.

영문 초록

In Jeonju, there were 29 female missionaries, who included 15 wives of missionaries, five women in the ministry of evangelism for Korean women, four women in the ministry of education, and five women in the hospital ministry. They had refinement, cultural knowledge, and even professionalism to some degree thanks to the high-quality education they received. The Presbyterian Church in the United States(PCUS) provided them with a material foundation for their activities, and they could maintain the same standard of living at the Korean site of their missionary work as their homeland. The Jeonju Station was a large complex missionary organization that had a school, hospital, and Bible school under its supervision. It necessarily required the participation of professional ministers for its overall smooth operation. All of the individual female missionaries were the essential personnel of the station who had clear roles in terms of function. One of the prominent characteristics of the Jeonju missionary community’s operation was its strong public nature. The female missionaries of Jeonju were placed in a position to perform their duties under the control of the Executive Committee(남장로교 선교본부) and the Korea Mission(한국선교부) broadly and the Jeonju missionary society narrowly. They had to exercise their mercy for the Korean people, who wanted to do missionary work for them in a very limited way. The female missionaries of Jeonju were a group of professional or semi-professional workers who were well adjusted to the site of their missionary work and were based on functionality and efficiency rather than workers of transcendent relief.
