국문 초록

This Study aimed to enrich a local festival’s content by introducing half-mask designs based on four representative butterflies of the Hampyeong Butterfly Festival. To achieve this, the species—Papilio xuthus(Asian swallowtail), Papilio maackii(Alpine black swallowtail), Sasakia charonda(great purple emperor) and Sericinus montela(Dragon swallowtail)—were selected as design motifs for each half-mask, reflecting their distinct morphological features, color patterns, symbolic significance, and ecological traits. During the creation process, various materials such as reflective embellishments and metallic pigments were integrated to capture the butterflies’ unique hues and shapes, resulting in visually engaging masks that emphasize both artistry and thematic coherence. These half-masks were designed to complement the festival’s butterfly-centered identity while offering attendees a novel interactive experience. By applying the butterflies’ structural characteristics and color palettes, the study demonstrates the potential of half-masks to diversify festival programs and enhance artistic quality at regional events. Furthermore, by exploring creative design approaches that adapt morphological and symbolic elements form each butterfly, the study opens up multiple possibilities for elevating cultural content and visitor engagement. It is anticipated that these half-masks will gain popularity as distinctive festival attractions, contributing to the overall branding of local festivals and fostering deeper appreciation for regional cultural resources.
