This essay explores the evolving concept of home in connection with mobility, challenging its conventional association with fixity. As global mobility intensifies, those who leave their place of origin risk being labelled as “homeless,” reinforcing exclusionary frameworks. To rethink this dynamic, the essay employs the concept of affect, which foregrounds movement over static locations. Drawing on Penttinen and Kynsilehto’s Gender and Mobility, it examines two contrasting affective operations of mobility: “gendering,” which confines mobile individuals within heteronormative structures, and “queering,” which disrupts normative representations and embraces fluidity. Sara Ahmed’s notion of home as orientation further serves as a critical reference point, framing home as something actively shaped by movement. Through an analysis of Nomadland , this essay explores how home can be carried, adapted, and reconfigured rather than a fixed place. Ultimately, this essay critiques the traditional fixation on home as a static entity, revealing its capacity to exclude and marginalize those who do not conform to settled life. By reconsidering home through mobility and affect, this study opens up possibilities for imagining home beyond its conventional, territorialized constraints, aligning it with the lived experiences of people on the move.
