예이츠 시에 나타난 자아추구의 여정: 음양사상을 중심으로

국문 초록

음양의 관념은 자연적 속성을 가리키는 것에서 추상적 사유로 그 개념이 확장되어 하나의 사상으로 성숙하였다. 동서양의 사상적 장벽을 초월하여 고대인들은 그들 자신을 둘러싼 모든 환경을 상대적으로 생각하거나 상보적인 관점으로 해석하는 데 익숙했다. 따라서 음양의 관념이 중국인들에 의해 사상적으로 정립되었지만 동서양을 막론한 인류의 보편적 세계관이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 음양의 특징인 상호대립성, 상호의존성, 소장평형성, 상호전화성, 그리고 상호조화성 등을 고찰하고 예이츠의 문학과 철학 그리고 삶에 그것을 접목시켜 해석한다. 이 논문의 목적은 예이츠의 시가 초기, 중기, 후기를 거처 존재의 통일인 음양합덕에 도달하는 과정을 그의 자아발견의 여정과 접목시켜 고찰하는 것이다.

영문 초록

The notion of Yin-Yang has expanded referring to the natural attribute to the abstract thought and matured to become a philosophy. Beyond the ideological barrier of the East and the West, ancient people were used to considering their environments and to interpreting them from the complementary perspective. The notion that has been developed first in China is now a universal view of the world in both East and West. This paper studies the five properties of Yin-Yang: mutual confrontation, interdependence, balance of rise and fall, mutual change of quality, and mutual harmony. And Yeats and his work are interpreted on the basis of these properties. The Yin-Yang is similar to Yeats’s Unity of Being. The paper will study how Yeats uses this concept to make his own Unity of Being in his early, middle, and late poetry.
