연구목적: 본 연구의 목적은 기후 위기 가뭄 적응 행동이 보호 동기 및 제도적 지원의 잠재적 역할과 어떤 관계를 보이는지 북부 카메룬을 중심으로 살펴보는 것이다. 연구의 중요성: 자원이 부족하며, 젠더 불평등이 자리잡은 농촌 지역사회가 기후 변화 적응의 도전과제에 직면했음을 인식한 본 연구는 여성 농업인 개인 수준의 보호 동기를 넘어, 가뭄 적응 행동을 위한 정책적 지원이 제공되어야 할 필요성을 제시한다. 연구방법론: 비확률 표본 및 계층표본 추출을 거쳐 모집한 북부 카메룬 여성 농업인을 중심으로 설문조사를 통한 단면연구를 실시하였다. 수집한 데이터를 바탕으로 조절효과 모형 기반의 경로 분석을 수행하였다. 연구결과: 총 343명의 여성이 본 설문조사에 참여하였다. 분석 결과 보호 동기와 가뭄 적응 행동간 양의 관계를 파악하였다. 구체적으로는, 보호 동기의 구성요소로서 인지된 취약성 (β=.104, t-value= 2.291, P<0.05), 인지된 심각성 (β=.143, t-value= 2.322, P<0.05), 자기 효능감 (β=.174, t-value= 3.144, P<0.001), 대응 효능감 (β=.120, t-value= 2.218, P<0.05)이 통계적으로 유의하였다. 또한, 여성 농업인을 위한 제도적 지원의 조절 효과를 확인하여 자기 효능감 (β =.031, t-value=2.242, P<0.05)과 대응 비용 (β =-.060, t-value=-2.107, P<0.05) 으로 제시된 보호 동기와 가뭄 적응 행동 간의 관계에 제도적 지원이 영향을 미친다는 것을 제시했다. 결론 및 시사점: 본 연구는 여성 농업인들의 보호 동기 그 자체만으로는 젠더 불평등에 직면한 농촌 지역사회가 지속가능한 가뭄 보호 동기를 실현하는데 불충분할 수 있음을 설명한다. 결론적으로 여성 농업인의 가뭄 적응 행동을 설명하는데 있어 제도적 지원이 중요하다는 것을 시사한다. 정부는 여성 농업인 대상 농업 자원과 교육훈련을 충분히 제공하여 사회환경적 변화에 대응하기 위한 기반을 마련해야 한다. 결국 이는 젠더 불평등이 자리잡은 기후 적응의 도전과제를 해결하는데 기여할 것이다.

영문 초록

Purpose: This study examines the association between protection motivation and drought adaptation behavior with the potential role of institutional support for women under climate crisis in Northern Cameroon. Originality: Beyond individual protection motivation, the research proposes the importance of institutional support for adaptive resources to address climate change adaptation challenges embedded in gender inequality across farming communities in low resource settings. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was carried out using non-probabilistic and probabilistic sampling techniques, known as systematic sampling, to recruit women farmers in Northern Cameroon. The data was analyzed using path analysis with moderation modeling. Result: A total of 343 women participated in the survey. The results demonstrated the positive associations between protection motivation and drought adaptation behavior. Specifically, protection motivation constructs such as perceived vulnerability (β=.104, t-value= 2.291, P<0.05), perceived severity (β=.143, t-value= 2.322, P<0.05), self-efficacy (β=.174, t-value= 3.144, P<0.001), and response efficacy (β=.120, t-value= 2.218, P<0.05) were statistically significant. Furthermore, the moderating effect of the institutional support for women farmers was identified, influencing the associations between protection motivation represented as self-efficacy (β =.031, t-value=2.242, P<0.05) or response cost (β =-.060, t-value=-2.107, P<0.05) and drought adaptation behaviors. Conclusions and Implication: The study concludes that protection motivation among women farmers can be insufficient to initiate sustainable drought adaptation in farming communities faced with gender inequality. Therefore, institutional support for women matters in explaining women farmers’ drought adaptation behaviors. The government should provide adequate farm resources to women farmers and train them to adapt to socio-environmental changes. This will contribute to solving climate adaptation challenges embedded in gender inequality.
