국문 초록

<배비장전>에 나타나는 환대의 문법은 고풍스러운 옛 선현의 글에서부터 비롯되지 않는다. 애랑과 같은 낮은 존재에서부터, 해녀나 뱃사공과 같이 제주의 가장자리에서 활동하고 있는 존재들로부터 들려오는 목소리를 통해 <배비장전>이 가지고 있는 환대의 문법은 완성된다. 이런 형태의 환대가 강조되는 것은 아마도 특수한 문화지리적 특성을 지닌 제주도를 배경으로 삼았기 때문이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 제주목사나 배비장과 같은 인물은 제주에 머물다가 언제든지 떠날 수 있는 인물이기 때문에 공동체에 편입하기에 어려움을 가질 수밖에 없다. 더욱이 그들은 토착민보다 높은 계급적 지위를 가지고 있기 때문에 공동체 위에 군림하며 양반으로서의 자신의 위치를 확인하고자 할 것이다. 그러나 <배비장전>은 배비장의 추락과 그 이후의 삶을 통해 오히려 제주 사람의 입장에서, 낮은 곳과 가장자리에서 들려오는 낯선 목소리를 경청하고 공동체의 일원이 될 것을 촉구하고 있다. 그런 삶의 태도를 가지고 있을 때 오히려 ‘양반임’이 완성될 수 있다는 것을 배비장의 성공담을 통해 보여줌으로써 환대의 문법을 강화시킨다.

영문 초록

The grammar of hospitality found in “Baebijang-jeon” does not stem from the refined old writings of the aristocratic past but is perfected through the voices of marginalized figures who operate from the periphery of Jeju, such as servants, hae-nyeo(female divers) and boatmen. This form of hospitality is emphasized because of Jeju Island’s unique cultural landscape. Figures such as Jeju's pastors or Baebijang are individuals who can reside in Jeju but can leave anytime, making it difficult for them to assimilate into the community. Moreover, their higher class status might drive them to assert their position in the community and reaffirm their nobility. However, “Baebijang-jeon” urges his peers to listen to the unfamiliar voices from the lower places and peripheries of Jeju, encouraging them to become a part of the community. The downfall of Baebijang and his life thereafter showcases his success story, that one can achieve “nobility” by integrating into the community. This strengthens the grammar of hospitality.
