국문 초록

헤겔과 니체는 근대와 현대를 대표하는 가장 극단에 서 있는 철학자라고 말할 수 있다. 두 철학자가 타협할 수 없을 정도로 충돌하고 있다는 점은 이론적이며 형이상학적 원리의 차원에서 활발하게 논의되어 왔다. 그러나 양 철학의 대립 적 개념들과 원리들이 실제로 삶이 이루어지는 구체적인 정치와 역사의 무대에 서 어떻게 발현되고 긴장을 유발하는지의 문제는 별다른 조명을 받지 못하였다. 헤겔과 니체에게 있어 프랑스혁명은 매우 결정적인 사건이었다. 이 혁명에 대한 그들의 견해는 정치 및 역사 철학에서 두 철학이 지닌 전반적 특징을 반영 하고 있으며, 구체적 삶의 현장에서 양자의 상이한 진단과 해결책을 보여준다. (1) 프랑스혁명에서 공포정치가 출현한 원인을 헤겔은 보편성과 특수성의 모순 에 기초하여 해명하려고 했던 반면, 니체는 열등하고 비열한 천민들의 승리에서 찾았다. (2) 프랑스혁명의 이론적 토대를 제공한 루소와 관련하여 헤겔은 루소 가 자의적인 계약을 통해 추상적인 자유만을 추구했다고 비판했는데, 니체는 루 소야말로 만인의 평등사상을 개진함으로써 간교하고 약한 유대인이 세계사에서 승리하게끔 결정적인 교두보를 마련한 인물로 간주하였다. (3) 근대 시민사회의 한계를 벗어나기 위한 해결책으로 헤겔은 국가를 제시했던 반면, 니체는 새로운 가치를 창조하는 미래의 인간을 내세웠다. 헤겔의 입장에서 본다면, 프랑스혁명을 단순히 유대와 로마의 지속적인 싸움 의 지평에서 해석하는 니체는 정치 경제의 사회구조를 도외시하고 오로지 개인 의 심리학적이고 정신적인 측면만을 강조하는 새로운 독단적 환원주의자에 지 나지 않는다. 반면 니체의 눈에, 정신의 발달사의 맥락에서 프랑스혁명을 평가 하는 헤겔은 현실의 삶을 극복해 나가기에는 너무나도 지친 또 다른 한 명의 유 대인에 불과하다. 프랑스혁명을 두고 양자 사이에 구축된 이런 대립 양상은 이 론적인 차원에서뿐만 아니라 현실적인 역사적 삶 속에서도 헤겔이냐/니체냐의 양자택일적 선택의 기로로 우리를 내몬다.

영문 초록

Hegel and Nietzsche are among the most extreme philosophers representing the modern and contemporary eras. The irreconcilable conflict between these two intellectual giants has been extensively analyzed at the theoretical and metaphysical levels. However, the question of how their opposing concepts and principles generate intense tensions in the political and historical arenas has not been given much attention. The French Revolution was a pivotal event for both Hegel and Nietzsche. Their perspectives on this revolution reflect the broader characteristics of their political and historical philosophies, revealing their differing diagnoses and solutions in the context of real life. (1) While Hegel explained the cause of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution as a contradiction between universality and particularity, Nietzsche attributed it to the triumph of an inferior and ignoble mob. (2) Regarding Rousseau, whose ideas provided the theoretical foundation for the French Revolution, Hegel criticized him for seeking only abstract freedom through arbitrary contracts, whereas Nietzsche saw him as the key figure who paved the way for the victory of cunning and weak Jews in world history by promoting the idea of equality for all. (3) To overcome the limitations of modern civil society, Hegel proposed the state, while Nietzsche envisioned the man of the future who would create new values. From Hegel’s perspective, Nietzsche, who interprets the French Revolution merely as an ongoing struggle between Jews and Romans, is a new metaphysical dogmatist who disregards the socio-economic structure and focuses solely on individual psychological and spiritual mechanisms. Conversely, in Nietzsche’s view, Hegel, who evaluates the French Revolution within the framework of the development of the spirit, is just another weary Jew, too exhausted to confront the harsh realities of life. These contrasting interpretations of the French Revolution by the two philosophers ultimately compel us to choose between Hegel and Nietzsche, not only at the theoretical level but also in the realm of actual historical life.
