국문 초록

본고는 『필레보스』편 서론부에 담긴 색과 모양의 비유(12e~13a)를 탐구 한다. 이를 위해 필자는 우선 본 비유가 등장하는 맥락을 소개한다(II장). 이어서 필 자는 이 비유의 의미를 풀어본다. 『티마이오스』편의 논의를 참조한 해석에 따를 때 본 비유는 즐거움에 관련하여 다음 두 가지 사항을 알려준다. 먼저 한 즐거움을 그 즐거움이 되게 하는 그 요소가 그 즐거움을 다른 하나의 즐거움과 상반되게 된 다. 또한 각 즐거움을 특정한 즐거움이게 하는 바로 그 요소에 담긴 일종의 비례 관 계에 의해 즐거움 간 차이가 설명될 수 있다(III장). 이어서 필자는 이러한 해석이 대화편의 이어지는 핵심적 논의와도 잘 부합한다는 점을 확인한다. 먼저 즐거움을 여러 즐거움으로 구별하는 상술한 방법이 프로메테우스적 방법에 따라 하나를 여럿 으로 구별하는 방법과 상통함을 확인한다. 또한 본 작품 본론에 등장하는 즐거움의 구별법, 특별히, 적도를 기준 삼는 구별법이 좋은 즐거움과 나쁜 즐거움의 차이를 일종의 비례 관계의 차이로 설명하는 색과 도형의 비유의 의미를 잘 설명한다는 걸 보인다(IV장).

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to examine the analogy of colors and shapes in Plato’s Philebus (12e~13a). To this end, I first introduce the context in which the analogy appears (Chapter II), and then proceed to interpret its meaning. Drawing on the discussion in the Timaeus, I argue that the analogy reveals two key points regarding pleasure. First, the very element that constitutes a particular pleasure also serves to differentiate it from other pleasures. Second, the differences between pleasures can be explained by a kind of proportional relationship inherent in the very element that defines each pleasure (Chapter III). I then show that this interpretation aligns closely with the subsequent central discussions of the dialogue. In particular, I demonstrate that the method of distinguishing one pleasure from another in the analogy of colors and shapes corresponds to the Promethean method, which addresses the so-called One and Many Problem. I further argue that the method of differentiating pleasures found in the main part of the dialogue—specifically, the method based on the standard of the mean—provides a coherent explanation of the analogy of colors and shapes, which describes the difference between good and bad pleasures in terms of differences in proportional relationships (Chapter IV).
