국문 초록

북한의 유튜브를 통한 사이버 선전ㆍ선동ㆍ프로파간다에 대한 관심이 뜨겁다. 일반인들이 해외의 인터넷에 접속하는 것이 북한 내에서 대부분 불법이라는 점을 고려하면 북한의 유튜브 활동은 인지전의 하나인 전략적 커뮤니케이션 활동이라고 이해된다. 따라서 북한 유튜브 활동과 영향력은 인지전 맥락 내에서 이해해야만 한다. 그러나 국내ㆍ외의 높은 관심에도 불구하고 북한의유튜브 활동을 인지전의 맥락에서 인지전의 장이 되는 인간 도메인과 무기화된 내러티브에 초점을 맞춘 전략적 분석은 없다. 따라서 이 연구는 북한의 유튜브 상에서의 인지전의 실태와 영향력을 파악하고자 가장 최근의 형태를 나타내고 있는 유튜브 활용프로파간다의 사례를 선정하여 내러티브를 분석하였다. 연구를 위해 선정된 북한 유튜브는 ‘유미’의 브이로그의 사례로 한정되었다. 연구방법은 질적연구방법인 내러티브 분석방법, 그 중 구조적 내러티브 분석방법이 적용되었다. 이 기법을 통해 유미의 유튜브 내러티브의 구성적 특성과 핵심적 키워드를 분석하여 북한 유튜브의 선전·선동·프로파간다 핵심 내러티브와 의도를 분석하였다. 분석결과 뉴미디어를 활용한 북한의 유튜브 선전선동은 인지전의 하나인 전략적 커뮤니케이션으로서 활용되고 있으며 이들의 내러티브에 상당한 영향력이 잠재되어 있다고 분석되었다. 결론 및 논의부분에서 북한 유튜브 내러티브의 전략적 특성과 잠재적 영향력에 대해 평가하고 논의하였다.

영문 초록

There is a growing interest in North Korea's use of YouTube as a platform for cyber propaganda and agitation. Access to the internet is mostly illegal for the ordinary citizens in North Korea. Therefore, it is reasonable to consider the cyber propaganda of North Korean YouTubers as a strategic communication activity in the context of cognitive warfare. This assumption suggests that North Korea's YouTube propaganda should be examined as an act of cognitive warfare. However, there has been no academic research conducted to explore the narratives and influence of North Korea's YouTube propaganda in order to understand its impact on the human domain and its use of narrative as a weapon. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the status and influence of North Korea's cognitive warfare on YouTube, using a sample of 18 videos uploaded to the “Youmi's Space” account. The study employs a qualitative analysis method, namely narrative analysis, to identify the structural features and recurring themes in the narratives, in order to assess their potential impact on the audience. The results indicate that North Korea’ YouTube propaganda is a part of strategic communications in the context of greater cognitive warfare planed by North Korean government. Also, the narratives in the YouTube may have significant influence on the audience. That implies the narratives are weaponized narrative as a strategic communication tool. In the conclusion and discussion, the study results, the political implication, and the contribution are discussed.
