최치원의 ‘仙’ 이해

국문 초록

최치원은 재당시절에 회남절도사 高騈을 통해서 ‘仙’을 이해하였다. 그것은 당시 당 사회의 神仙道 추구와 깊은 관련을 가졌지만, 특별히 군신 상하 질서에 입각한 유교적 사고를 기반으로 하였다. 귀국 후에 그는 재당시절의 ‘선’ 이해를 유지하면서 한편으로 불교와 관련하여 ‘선’을 이해하였다. 그것은 신라 전통을 바탕으로 한 神仙思想을 계승하면서 內心을 닦아 사람을 구제하는 修鍊的 신선사상으로 제시되었다. 최치원은 ‘신라에 玄妙의 도가 있다’고 하면서 그것을 ‘風流’라고 하였다. 나아가 ‘마음으로 유불도 삼교를 융합하면서 풍류를 떨쳤던 國仙’으로 경문왕을 지목하였다. 그는 유불도 삼교융합의 토대로 산천을 돌아다니며 수련하였던 화랑을 강조하였다. 때문에 화랑과 긴밀한 관계를 맺으면서 신라 고유의 전통을 중시하며 유교와 불교를 존숭하여 내심을 수련하였던 경문왕과 헌강왕을 ‘최고의 神仙’으로 정의하였다. 최치원의 ‘선’ 이해는 자신과 정치적 입장을 함께 하였던 경문왕계 왕실의 위상을 강화하려는 의도를 가졌다.

영문 초록

While staying in the Tang Dynasty of China, Choi, Chi-won came to understand the concept of Sun Taoism by forming close ties with Gao-Pian, military governor of Huainan Prefecture. Although his understanding was closely related to achieving a status of immorality prevalent in the Tang society, it was focused largely on the Confucians aspect of social orders. Upon his return to his homeland, Silla, he endeavored further to develop the conception of Sun Taoism in Buddhist terms. He asserted that Taoist hermit should bring salvation to the troubled in a way that preserves Silla’s native tradition and spiritual culture. Choi, Chi-won stated that Korea had a mysteriously profound and sublime way called ‘Pungryu’, pointing out that the embodiment of Pungryu was King Gyeongmoon with a comprehensive understanding of Three Doctrine(Confucianism, Daoism, Buddism). Choi, Chi-won emphasized the Hwarang, which conducted physical and spiritual disciplines depending on the integration of the Three Doctrine. In relation to the Hwarang, Choi, Chi-won described King Gyeongmoon and King Heongang as the Ultimate Taoist hermit immortals with an extensive comprehension of the Three Teachings as well as Silla’s spiritual tradition. It suggests that he attempted to define Taoist hermit in his favor so as to give king political support.
