국문 초록

玁狁은 西周王朝의 서북쪽에 있었던 초원 민족계 집단으로, 문헌에서는 犬戎이라고도 불렸다. 서주 시기, 험윤과의 전역과 관련된 기록을 검토해 본 결과 다음과 같은 몇 가지 특징을 발견할 수 있었다. 첫째, 험윤은 주로 농한기에 주를 침입했다. 둘째, 험윤과 서주의 전쟁은 주로 涇河 河谷의 교통로를 중심으로 진행되었다. 셋째, 중국 학계 일각에서는 험윤을 호전적인 ‘기마민족’으로 인식하고 있으나, 관련 기록을 검토해 본 결과, 당시 험윤의 주력은 전차병으로, 전문적인 기마군단은 아니었다. 넷째, 서주와 험윤의 전역은, 주로 험윤의 공격을 격퇴하는 ‘擊退戰’과 험윤을 정벌하여 그들의 복종을 이끌어 내려는 ‘對外征伐戰’의 양상으로 진행되었다. 다섯째, 험윤과 서주의 전쟁은 일방적인 관계가 아닌, 일진일퇴의 길항관계의 양상을 띠고 있었다. 장기간 이어진 양자 간의 관계는, 험윤이 주를 공격하여 周幽王을 살해하고, 서주를 멸망시키면서 일단락되었다.

영문 초록

Xianyun (玁狁, also known as 犬戎Quanrong) is a grassland ethnic group that resided at the Northwest of the Western Zhou Dynasty(西周王朝, 11th century to 771 B.C.,). After reviewing the military campaign records related to the Xianyun during the Western Zhou Era, it was possible to identify the following trends and characteristics. First, the Xianyun generally invaded during the agricultural off-seasons. Second, the battles between the Western Zhou and Xianyun surrounded the roads of Jinghe (涇河) river valleys (河谷). Third, although some Chinese scholars consider the Xianyun as warlike “horse-riding people,” after reviewing the related records, the major Xianyun army weren’t professional “cavalry”, but were moved by chariots at that time. Fourth, from the perspective of Western Zhou, the battles with Xianyun were normally in the forms of “withdrawal battles (擊退戰)” to repel the invasion by the Xianyun or the “external punitive expeditions (對外征伐戰)” to conquer the Xianyun. Fifth, in consideration of these findings, the wars between Western Zhou and Xianyun were definitely not one-sided but were of rivalry with repeated ebb and flows. However, this all came into a halt when Xianyun murdered King You of Zhou (周幽王).
