웅진시기 백제의 약재 교역과 그 의미

국문 초록

본고는 『重修政和經史證類備用本草』의 도홍경 自注에 보이는 백제 약재의 교역 시점과 방식을 검토하고 그 의미를 생각해 본 것이다. 인삼과 관동화, 2종의 백제 약재가 전하는데, 그 전거자료는 南朝代 집대성된 본초학의 성과를 반영했다. 따라서 2종의 백제 약재는 남조대 교역된 물품의 일종이었다고 이해하였다. 2종의 백제 약재는 모두 고구려의 약재와 함께 보인다. 인삼의 경우 고구려에서 조공하였다고 했다. 백제가 고구려의 신속되어 있었기 때문이었다고 했다. 이와 같은 서술은 백제의 약재가 중개 교역된 사정을 말해준다. 5세기 후반이 주목된다. 이때 백제는 고구려의 통제를 받아 對남조 교섭이 불안정했다. 이러한 상황 속에서 고구려는 약재를 중개했고, 남조 측에다가 백제를 신속국으로 소개했다고 추정된다. 물론 5세기 후반 백제는 고구려의 신속국이 아니었다. 양국은 대립적인 관계를 유지했다. 그럼에도 백제에서는 실리를 얻기 위해 적대국인 고구려와 교역했다. 적어도 그를 묵인했다고 보인다. 웅진시기 백제의 약재 교역은 국제관계의 명분보다 교역의 실리를 도모한 일면을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This article aims at explaining the timing and the way of medicine trade by examining the medicine of Baekje from Classified Materia Medica(證類本草), abbreviation for the Revised Zhenghe Edition of Classified and Practical Basic Materia Medica Based on Historical Classics(重修政和經史證類備用本草) during Ungjin period. In the annotation of Classified Materia Medica,the two kinds of medicines of Baekje, ginseng and coltsfoot(款冬花), were introduced in the content which quoted Dohonggyeong(陶弘景)’s writings. It is hard to identify whether these quotations were the direct writings of Dohonggyeong or not. However, it reflected the result of the Knowledge on the Herbal Medicine(本草學), compiled during the Southern dynasties period. The two medicines belonged to trade items of Baekje, and were traded with Goguryeo in the late fifth century. At that time Goguryeo blocked direct trade between Baekje and the Southern dynasties. Instead, the trade was made in the form of tribute to Goguryeo from Baekje, and Goguryeo intermediated these tributes to Southern dynasties. Ginseng and coltsfoot were among these tributes.When intermediating goods, Goguryeo introduced Baekje as its vassal stateto Southern dynasties ; however, it was based on Goguryeo's unilateral perception which was different from the historical fact. In 475, Baekje was attacked by Goguryeo and transferred the capital to Ungjin, but tried to stop the southward advance. Baekje was more hostile state rather than vassal state. Nevertheless, Baekje traded with hostile state, Goguryeo, and endured the situation even when Goguryeo introduced Baekje to the Southern dynasties as vassal state. It was to gain practical interest through trade. Baekje's medicine trade in the fifth century was one of several cases in which the form did not match the fact in international relations of East Asia between the fourth and sixth centuries.
