국문 초록

본 연구는 20세기 초반에 제작된 1:10,000 축척의 한국 근대지형도를 중심으로 그 특징과 이 중 「진주」 도엽의 지명과 기호를 중심으로 문화적 요소를 분석하였다. 1:10,000 지형도들은 한반도의 정밀한 지형 및 지리적 특성을 상세히 나타내며, 당시 군사적, 경제적 필요에 의해 제작되었다. 특히, 한국의 원지형, 도로망, 자원 등을 자세히 기록하고 있으며, 당시의 측량 및 지도 제작 기술이 반영되어 있다. 이러한 지도들은 한국 근대사, 특히 일제강점기의 지리적 변화와 문화적 영향을 연구하는 데 매우 중요한 자료라고 할 수 있다. 1:10000 근대지형도는 한국의 주요 도시를 중심으로 처음 45개 도시에서 시작하여 제2차 세계대전 말까지 63개 도시로 확장되었다. 이 지형도들은 한국의 정치적, 역사적, 군사적, 경제적 중심지를 포함한 다양한 지역을 상세하게 나타내고 있다. 이 중 「진주」 도엽( 1917년 측도와 1933녀 제2회 수정측도)을 중심으로 지명과 기호, 하천 등을 디지타이징하여 역사지리정보에 대해 상세히 비교⸱분석하였다. 「진주」 도엽의 지명과 기호 등을 통해 물리적 지형뿐만 아니라 진주성과 남강을 비롯한 다양한 역사적 랜드마크, 문화적 특성들이 이 지역의 역사와 전통을 이해하는 데 중요한 요소로 다루어지고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이 논문은 1:10,000 근대지형도의 기술적, 역사적, 문화적 가치를 드러내고, 「진주」 도엽의 지명과 기호를 통해 지역의 문화와 역사를 이해하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This study focuses on the 1:10,000 scale modern topographic maps of Korea produced in the early 20th century, analyzing their features and the cultural elements of the ‘Jinju’ sheet, particularly in terms of geographical names and symbols. The 1:10,000 topographic maps accurately depict the detailed topography and geographical characteristics of the Korean Peninsula and were created to meet the military and economic needs of the time. They include detailed records of Korea's original terrain, road networks, and resources, and reflect the surveying and map-making techniques of the period. These maps are considered highly valuable for studying the modern history of Korea, especially the geographical changes and cultural impacts during the Japanese colonial period. The 1:10,000 modern topographic maps initially covered 45 major cities in Korea and expanded to 63 cities by the end of World War II, providing detailed representations of various regions including political, historical, military, and economic centers. The study conducted a detailed comparison and analysis of geographical names, symbols, and rivers by digitizing them, focusing on the ‘Jinju’ sheet (surveyed in 1917 and the second revision in 1933). It was found that these names and symbols, including landmarks such as Jinju Fortress and the Nam River, are crucial for understanding not only the physical geography but also the history and tradition of the region. This paper reveals the technical, historical, and cultural value of the 1:10,000 modern topographic maps and underscores the importance of understanding the culture and history of the region through the geographical names and symbols of the ‘Jinju’ sheet.
