조선왕조 태실과 태봉 관련 지명의 공간적 분포와 변천에 대한 역사지리학적 고찰

국문 초록

태실 지명은 조선왕조의 권위와 신성성이 공간적으로 전승된 무형의 문화유산이다. ‘태봉’, ‘태실골’, ‘태봉산’ 등으로 남은 지명은 장소에 대한 집단기억을 보존하며, 공동체의 정체성과 문화유산을 잇는 매개체로 작용한다. 이는 단순한 지명이 아니라 권력과 기억의 관계를 담은 문화사적 기호로 이해될 수 있다. 본 연구는 조선왕조의 왕실 의례 공간인 태실(胎室)과 관련된 지명이 어떻게 전승되고 있으며, 문화유산적 가치는 무엇인지에 대해 역사문화지리학적으로 고찰하였다. 연구 방법은 ‘태’, ‘봉’, ‘실’이 포함된 고시·미고시·행정지명 114건을 국토지리정보원 DB 및 《조선기본도》에서 추출하고, HGIS를 활용해 지명의 분포 특성과 시계열 변화를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 태실 지명은 충청·경기·경상 지역 산지 및 구릉지를 중심으로 집중되며, 태실의 풍수지리적 입지 패턴과 유교이념적 공간 인식, 태실 조성의 역사적 변천 과정 등이 명칭 구조에 반영되어 있었다. 왕태실의 입지가 태실 지명의 지역화에 큰 영향을 끼친 점도 주목되며, 이는 지명이 지역에서 권력의 장소화를 반영하는 상징 장치로서 작동하였다는 사실을 반증한다. 본 연구는 지명이 단지 위치 정보를 넘어서 역사성과 집단기억을 담은 문화 텍스트임을 제시하며, 태실 지명의 유산화 가능성과 제도적 보존, 디지털 아카이브 구축 등 정책적 대응의 필요성을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This study examines taesil-related toponyms as intangible cultural heritage that spatially represent the authority and sanctity of the Joseon Dynasty. Place names such as Taebong, Taesilgol, and Taebongsan preserve collective memory and function as cultural markers linking royal rituals with local identity. Using a historical-cultural geographical approach, the study investigates how these toponyms have been transmitted and what cultural value they hold today. A total of 114 official, unofficial, and administrative place names containing “tae” (胎), “bong” (峰), and “sil” (室) were extracted from the National Geographic Information Institute database and the Joseon Basic Map, and analyzed using Historical GIS (HGIS). The analysis shows that these toponyms are concentrated in mountainous regions of Chungcheong, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongsang provinces, reflecting geomantic site selection, Confucian spatial thought, and historical shifts in taesil practices. The spatial localization of royal taesil sites played a key role in shaping local toponyms, functioning as symbolic instruments of royal power. This study argues that such toponyms are cultural texts containing historical memory and highlights the need for institutional preservation, heritage recognition, and digital archiving.
