영문 초록

This study is based on a Korean-Uzbek parallel corpus, in which we extracted the representative vocabulary expressions for apologies, namely ‘미안-’(mian-) and ‘죄송-’(joesong-) in Korean, and analyzed their corresponding apology expressions and strategies in Uzbek. The research findings indicated that Koreans frequently utilize ‘죄송-’(joesong-) in explicit and ritualistic contexts. In Uzbek, explicit apologies were represented with similar frequencies for ‘uzr’ and ‘kechirmoq’, while for ritual apologies, ‘kechirmoq’ accounted for more than 80%, demonstrating a significant proportion. From the perspective of Uzbek learners, it is expected that ‘죄송-’(joesong-) will be perceived as a ritual apology expression, and ‘미안-’(mian-) as an explicit apology. However, based on the corpus analysis revealing ‘미안-’(mian-) appearing in informal sentences at a rate of 92.9%, the Korean usage of ‘미안-’(mian-) could be interpreted as an impolite speech act that threatens the face of the recipient when used towards someone of higher status. Consequently, it is essential for Korean as a foreign language to integrate the teaching of apology expression vocabulary and speech act strategies.
