국문 초록

본 논문은 루이스 쌔커의 『구덩이』를 긍정심리학의 관점에서 분석한다. 긍정심리학의 관심 분야는 긍정 정서, 긍정 특질, 긍정 기관이다. 『구덩이』는 주인공 소년들의 친밀관계와 성장 과정을 조명하면서, 동시에 미국이 긍정 기관으로 변모하기 위해 무엇이 필요한가를 치밀하게 분석하고 있다. 따라서 긍정 심리학을 프리즘으로 『구덩이』를 읽는 것은 우리에게 많은 것을 시사한다. 개인의 성장과 함께 요구되는 것은, 그 개인이 충분히 역량을 발휘할 수 있도록 분위기를 조성하는 긍정 기관의 역할이기도 하다. 더불어 다민족으로 이루어진 미국이라는 나라가 나아가야 할 길은 취약층에 대한 자선이라기보다 그들의 강점을 계발하게 하고 인정해주며 함께 협력하는 길임을 이 작품은 분명히 제시하고 있다. 제로와 같은 소외계층의 정체성은 그들의 잠재력과 가능성을 충분히 살릴 수 있는 사회에서 그들의 역할을 다 할 때 바로 설 것이다. 제로와 스탠리가 함께 서로를 격려하며 산을 오르는 모습, 그것은 아동청소년 문학의 행복한 결말을 통해 작가가 미국사회에 던지는 심오한 긍정기관의 청사진이다.

영문 초록

Holes by Louis Sachar provides a hopeful vision for the United States (U.S.) as a positive institution, while illuminating a process of growth on the part of the protagonist, Stanley Yelnats through a close relationship with Zero, or Hector Zeroni. A reading of this masterpiece through the frame of Positive Psychology suggests important points for the U.S. to move forward. Along with personal growths of members of a society, it is important for the nation to be a positive institution so that it propels residents to fulfill themselves within it. This work emphasizes that the U.S. should provide vulnerable individuals with opportunities to fully develop their strengths, rather than charity. The voices of the vulnerable can be heard only when they can play a leading role in society, where they can rise to their full potential. The scene where Stanley and Zero encourage each other to continue their climbing is itself a prospect for the nation’s future given through a happy ending of young adult literature.
