영화 <작은 아씨들>의 리메이크 전략: 멀티모달리티를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 미국의 고전 소설 『작은 아씨들』을 영화로 각색한 <작은 아씨들>(1994)과 <작은 아씨들>(2019)을 비교하였다. 특히 시각 이미지가 2019년 작에서 1994년 작과 대비하여 페미니즘을 비롯해 영화가 전달하는 메시지를 어떻게 부각했는지 알아본다. 영화는 시청각 자원을 활용한 멀티모달 텍스트라는 매체적 특성을 갖는다. 이에 따라 두 영화의 곁텍스트인 영화 포스터 DVD 표지, 예고편, 2019년 영화 개봉에 앞서 출간된 원작 소설의 표지와 영화 텍스트의 시각 이미지를 중심으로 분석하였다. 분석한 시각 이미지는 등장인물 개개인과 이들 간의 상호작용, 당대 사회의 모습이며 시각 이미지를 분석하기 위한 분석의 틀로는 크레스와 반 리우웬의 시각 문법을 활용하였다. 분석 결과 1994년 작 영화는 남녀 간의 위상, 가족 구성원의 관계, 다인종·다문화의 묘사에서 새로운 관점보다는 기존의 사회 통념을 나타내었으나 2019년 작 영화는 남성과 여성, 가족, 백인과 유색인종의 모습을 더욱 평등하게 제시하였다. 이러한 변화는 변화한 사회와 관객이라는 맥락을 반영한 재번역이자 다시쓰기로 해석할 수 있다. 본 연구는 미디어 콘텐츠 장르 변환과 리메이크 제작이 활발한 현재 각색 리메이크 영화를 분석함으로써 문화 산업에서 번역이 갖는 의의를 찾아보았다.

영문 초록

This study compares two film adaptations of the classic American novel Little Women: the 1994 and 2019 versions. The study examines how each film functions as a retranslation of the original text, with particular attention to the contemporary elements emphasized in the 2019 adaptation. Treating film as a multimodal text that employs audiovisual resources, the study focuses on the visual images in both the paratexts and texts of both films. The analyzed visual images include character portrayals, interpersonal interactions, and representations of the period’s social context. Kress and van Leeuwen's visual grammar is the primary analytical tool employed. The analysis finds that the 1994 film largely conforms to traditional social norms concerning gender roles, family dynamics, and racial and cultural representation. In contrast, the 2019 adaptation offers a more modern interpretation of gender relations and family roles, along with a more inclusive representation of racial and ethnic diversity. These changes can be read as a feminist reinterpretation that reflects contemporary values of equality and inclusivity. Accordingly, the adaptation functions as both a retranslation and a rewriting that recontextualizes the novel for modern audiences. Situating these adaptations within the broader framework of genre transformation and remake culture, the study underscores the role of translation practices in the cultural industry.
