뮤지컬 <몬테크리스토>의 한국적 변용과 공연전략

국문 초록

EMK뮤지컬컴퍼니는 상대적으로 자유로운 유럽 뮤지컬 라이선스 협약 조건을 활용해 라이선스 뮤지컬 공연 시 국내 정서에 맞도록 한국적 해석을 입히는작업을 꾸준히 해왔다. 이 논문은 EMK의 뮤지컬 <몬테크리스토>를 주목하고, 유럽의 원작을 미국인 작업자들이 각색하고 여러 변화 단계를 거친 후 한국에서성공한 뮤지컬로 정착되고 IP까지 귀속되는 과정을 논구한다. 논의의 결과 <몬테크리스토>의 가족주의는 한국적 해석의 구체적인 내용으로 확인된다. 유럽의원작을 미국의 창작진이 각색하며 낭만적 사랑에 대한 테마를 확대하고 멜로드라마적 해석을 첨가했으나 실제로 멜로드라마적 표현방법을 활용하여 테마를 시각적으로 명확히 가시화한 것은 한국 프로덕션이었다. 관객의 감정을 조작하고 플롯을 통해 뚜렷한 도덕적 태도를 보이는 것에 모든 요소가 종속되어 있으며, 사회적 원인보다 개인의 사적인 윤리의 영역으로 갈등을 축소시키는 멜로드라마의귀결은 한국 버전의 가족주의를 통해 훨씬 뚜렷하게 부각된다. 한국 프로덕션의무대는 공간을 상상하게 하고 배우를 부각시키는 스위스 초연의 연극적 연출방식을 지우고, 무대의 영상 테크놀로지와 대형 세트를 활용하여 공간의 그림이 객석을 압도하는 환영주의를 극대화하는 방향으로 정리됨으로써 낭만적 사랑과 가족주의를 결합한 멜로드라마 <몬테크리스토>를 완성시켰다. 이러한 변화는 특히젠더 배치 면에서 한국 대극장 뮤지컬의 보수화를 견인했음을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

EMK Musical Company has consistently used the terms of the European musical’s relatively free licensing agreement to apply “Korean interpretation” to suit domestic sentiment. This paper focuses on EMK’s musical Monte Cristo, and discusses the process of American workers adapting the original novel of Europe and settling into a successful musical in Korea after transforming it into a certain performance context. As a result, Monte Cristo’s Familism is confirmed as a concrete interpretation of the Korean transformation. The original Switzerland musical version was adapted by American creators, expanding the theme of romantic love and adding melodramatic interpretations, but it was actually Korean production that visualized it using melodramatic expression methods. All elements of melodrama depend on manipulating the audience’s emotions and showing a clear moral attitude through plots, and the result of melodrama, which reduces conflict to the realm of personal ethics rather than social causes, is much more clearly highlighted through the Korean version of Familism. The stage of Korean production eliminated the theatrical staging of Switzerland premiere that imagines beyond the actual space and highlights actors/actresses, and used the stage’s visual technology and large set to maximize the illusionism that overwhelms the audience, completing the melodrama Monte Cristo. This changes can be seen as driving forces of the conservatism of Korean mega musicals, especially in terms of gender placement.
