거리와 무역 비용이 개발도상국의 양국간 무역에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 중력모형의 거리변수에 대한 추정치 문제(matter)와 무역비용에 대하여 개발도상국을 중심으로 분석하였다. 중력모형에서 거리변수를 운송비의 영향으로 간주했을 때 나타나는 과다 추정치 의 원인을 찾기 위하여 개발도상국을 동일대륙간의 무역과 기존의 중력모형으로 나누어 분석하였다. 그 결과 거리변수의 추정치는 아프리카, 유럽, 아메리카의 경우, 동일 대륙 간에서의 값이 더 축소되어 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 2가지 이유로 설명이 가능하다. 하나는 동일 대륙 간에는 내륙운송이 가능하기 때문에 그리고, 두 번째는 동일 대륙에 있는 국가들 간의 역사, 문화 및 사회적 유사성과 친밀감이 더 높기 때문에 거리에 대한 한계효과(marginal effect)가 축소되었다. 내륙운송의 이점이 낮고, 사회 문화적 이질성이 높은 아시아 대륙에서는 거리변수의 추정치가 동일대륙 내에서 축소되지 않았다. 또한 무역비용의 경우 개발도상국에서 농업분야의 무역비용과 제조업분야의 무역비용이 모두 양국의 무역에 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났는데, 제조업 분야 무역비용의 탄력도가 더 크게 나타났다.

영문 초록

In gravity model, the bilateral trade decrease with distance because of the transportation cost. However, the estimated coefficient of distance in gravity model is too large magnitude to explain transportation cost. This paper investigate the matter of magnitude to test the hypothesis that the coefficient of distance in the gravity model would be smaller in bilateral trade within same continent. The results shows that the estimated coefficients of distance on the bilateral trade within America, Africa and Europe (except Asia) is smaller than on all developing countries. There are two explanations. First, the in-land transportation is possible within same continent, so distance within same continent is less effective. Second, people within same continent have more culturally and socially similarity and familiarity so, marginal effect of distance is smaller. This paper also investigate the effect of trade cost in developing countries. Both trade costs of agriculture and manufacture are negative effect on the bilateral trade in developing countries. The trade cost of manufacture has more negative effect than agriculture in developing countries.
