국문 초록

본 연구는 타카모리의 작품에 나타난 ‘문화 정체성’에 대한 작가적, 인간적 고뇌의 과정과 결과를 중심에 두고 있다. 일본계 미국인이었던 아키오 타카모리(Akio Takamori, 1950~2017년)는 상이한 두 문화권을 모두 경험하면서 다수의 작품에서 문화 정체성에 대한 고찰이 뚜렷하게 구현되었기 때문이다. 타카모리의 문화 정체성에 대한 탐구는 1990년대 중반 이후부터 본격적으로 이뤄졌으며, 크게 세 번에 걸쳐 변화하였다. 초반에는 작가의 출생지인 노베오카(延岡) 거리 인물들을 주제로 한 연작 와 같이 고향에 대한 향수와 일본인으로서의 정체성이 드러난 작품을 볼 수 있다. 두 번째 , 와 등의 작품군에서는 일본계 미국인으로서 경험한 이중적 정체성에 대한 관심을 표현했다. 마지막 , 등의 작품에서는 두 문화권의 경계에 위치한 자신의 정체성에 대한 수용의 태도를 보여주었다. 이러한 변모는 타카모리가 일본인으로서 미국에 건너가 경험한 인간적, 문화적 정체성의 혼란과 변화 그리고 수용의 과정을 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있다. 국가의 물리적 경계가 무의미해져가는 시대에 문화권간의 교착과 동화(同化) 등에 대한 작업은 여러 작가들에 의해 다양한 매체로 시도되고 있다. 실용과 조형이라는 현대도예의 양분된 단순 논리에서 본다면 정체성을 화두로 하는 타카모리의 모색과 작품들은 추상표현주의 도예나 오브제 도예와는 또 다른 차원에서 조명해야 하는 도예사적 의의가 있다고 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study focused on the outcomes of Takamori s agony over his cultural identity in his works as an artist and human being. As a Japanese American, Akio Takamori(1950~2017) had experiences of two different cultures and embodied clearly his contemplation over his cultural identity in many of his works. His inquiry into his cultural identity became full-blown in the middle 1990s and underwent three major changes. In the early days, his nostalgia for his hometown and his identity as a Japanese were found in his series works including , which depicts peoples in streets of Nobeoka, his hometown. At the next phase, he expressed his interest in dual identity based on his experiences as a Japanese American in ㅏ, , and . At the final phase, he displayed an accepting attitude toward his identity along the boundary between two cultures in and . These changes show his confusion and changes with his human and cultural identity that he experienced in America to which he moved as a Japanese. In the era when physical boundaries between states become increasingly pointless, many artists have attempted at creating works about mixing and assimilation between different cultures with a range of media. From the simple dual logic of modern ceramics between practicality and formativeness, his searches and works about the topic of identity hold some significance in the history of ceramics as they signal parting from abstract expressionist or objet ceramics.
