국문 초록

과거에 존재했던 물질문화에 대한 의미부여와 그것을 소비하는 일에는 언제나 그것을 주도하는 주체가 존재한다. 발굴한 과거를 통해 부와 권력을 차별화하고자 하는 계층은, 과거의 물질문화를 위계질서에 대한 합리화나 하위 계층을 위한 계몽의 도구로 활용하기도 한다. 그 과정에서 복잡하고 구체적인 현실의 과거는 단순하고 추상적으로 미화된 과거로 왜곡된다. 과거는 권력주체가 원하는 방향으로 선별당하고 포장되어 새로운 맥락 안에 놓이게 된다. 그럼으로써 과거의 물질문화는 원래 존재했던 의미와는 완전히 다른 맥락 안에서 새로운 가치를 가지고 재발견된다. 고려청자는 분명 한반도에 존재했던 과거의 물질문화이다. 당대의 제품생산기술의 측면에서 볼 때, 첨단 기술이 돋보이는 제품이기도 했다. 그러나 그것은 근대기에 이르러, 서양이 원하는 오리엔탈 문화와 같은 구도로, 제국 일본이 원하는 식민지 한국의 로컬 문화를 대표하게 되었다. 이 로컬 문화를 구축하고 있는 이데올로기는 ‘골동성’이었다. 현재와 과거 사이에 새로운 시공간적인 거리를 만들고, 문화로서 인식하고, 예술적 기술을 강조하는 ‘골동성’의 원리들이 고려청자에 주입되었다. 고려청자는 제국의 골동취미를 충족시켜주는 식민지의 과거 물질문화로 착취당했던 것이다.

영문 초록

The significance and the consumption of material culture of the past have always been driven by certain social entities. The uncovered past cultural relics were used by the upper social class as effective tools to differentiate their wealth and social power, to rationalize the order of social hierarchy or to enlighten the lower social class. In this process, the complexity and concrete reality of the past is distorted into the simple and abstract beauty. The past is selected and packaged in a new discretionary context in the interest of powerful entities. This way, material culture of the past is rediscovered with a newly valued perception in a context entirely different from the original meaning. Goryeo celadon is definitely material culture of the past existed in the Korean peninsula. From the perspective of production technology of those times, it was remarkable state of the art product. But in the modern age, it was recognized as a cultural representative aligned to the concept of Oriental culture conceived by the West and as a colonial Korean local culture complying with Japanese imperial ambition. The ideology forming the basis of local culture was ‘antiqueness.’ In the Goryeo celadon, the Japanese collectors instilled various principles of ‘antiqueness’ such as distancing new span of time and space between the present and the past, cultural recognition and emphasis on artistic skill. Goryeo celadon was material culture of the past in the colonial era to satisfy the imperial taste for antiqueness.
