국문 초록

본 논문은 영화 『샤이닝』을 피에르 노라의 기억과 역사 개념을 바탕으로 영화속 잭의 사진을 분석한다. 영화 『샤이닝』에서 주인공 호텔 속 잭의 사진은 호텔의기억, 역사, 그리고 호텔에서 존재했던 학살과 연관된 죽음과 관련이 있다. 그의몸은 호텔의 과거를 되살리고 반복한다. 잭은 현재와 과거가 병존하는 존재이고호텔과 함께 노라의 기억이 장소이다. 호텔 벽 위의 사진 속 잭의 이미지는 내러티브 흐름을 중지시키는 빼기의 개념과 연관 된 것이 아니라 내러티브의 결말을 알리는, 그 단서를 제공해주는 더하기의 역할을 한다. 잭의 사진 자체는 감독에 의한선택으로서 그 사진은 호텔의 역사와 기억을 담고 있기에 바르트의 스터디움과 관련이 있고 사진 속 웃고 있는 이미지는 관객들이 거기서 잭을 발견하리라고는 예상을 못해서 그들에게 갑작스러운 반응을 일으키기 때문에 펑툼으로서 역할을 한다.마지막으로 잭의 얼어붙은 이미지는 사진 적 이미지로서 개인의 역사와 관련이 있다. 본 논문은 위 세 가지 요소를 분석하여 기억, 역사, 죽음이 잭의 사진과 긴밀한연관을 가지고 있고 호텔과 함께 피에르 노라의 기억과 역사 개념과 관련을 가진외연적 기호로서 작용한다는 것을 분석하였다.

영문 초록

In The Shining, Jack’s photograph on the wall has to do with memory, history, and death at The Overlook Hotel. His body revives and repeats the past at the Overlook Hotel. Jack’s present body is a signifier of what happened to the Overlook Hotel. It is a site of a memory (lieu de memoire). It is inextricably interwoven with the history of the Overlook Hotel by symbiotic relationship. As he is trapped in and haunted with the Hotel, Jack’s body is trapped in the photograph on the wall in the Overlook Hotel, which tells he have been there. Jack’s still image in the photograph, as Mulvey argues, becomes “the trace of the past and animates the inanimate human body.” Jack’s image in the photograph on the wall is not a subtraction which Raymond Bellour argues stops the narrative flow in the film. It helps the viewer to better understand the narrative flow, solving a narrative puzzle. His smile in the photograph is Barthes’ studium intertwined with social, cultural, and other meaning invested in the image and the photograph becomes punctum which is ‘a sudden and involuntary response.’ Jack frozen image at the end of the film is photographic image of death as the end of film narrative. As Kracauer argues, it is a person’s history which is buried under a layer of snow. Jack’s photographic image has to do with stillness of death and freezes a particular moment in personal history. It is a memory, history, and death at the Overlook Hotel as denotative sign, revealing the fact that the past repeats itself in the present.
