중학생의 진로탐색과 부모의 진로지지를 둘러싼 부모-자녀 상호 인식에 대한 질적 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 진로 관련 고민이 본격화되는 시기인 중학생들의 진로탐색과 부모의 진로지지 과정에서 부모와 자녀의 상호 인식은 어떠한지 살펴보고자 수행되었다. 이를 위해 부모와 청소년 자녀 7쌍을 대상으로 심층면접을 실시하였으며 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 희망진로 탐색과정에서 부모와 자녀의 인식 차이는 여러 차원으로 나타났다. 희망 직업은 일치하지만 진로를 향해 가는 과정에 고려하는 선택지에서 의견 차이를 보이거나, 자녀의 진로 설정에 대해 수긍하지만 보다 안정된 삶을 살아가는데 필요한 기술이나 영역을 더 확보해야 한다는 의견, 진로 설정에 영향을 주는 자료원에 대한 서로 다른 인식, 부모와 자녀의 희망 진로에서 차이를 보이는 경우 등이 있었다. 진로지지에 대한 상호 인식을 살펴본 결과, 부모는 부모가 원하는 큰 틀에서 벗어나지 않는 범위에서 포괄적으로 자녀를 지지하는 경향이었다. 자녀들의 인식은 부모의 진로 관련 정보 제공 등에 대해서는 긍정적인 반응을 보이지만, 부모의 지원과 관심이 주로 학업에 집중되어 있는 점에 대해서는 부담을 토로하고 있다. 자녀의 진로탐색 과정에서 부모와 자녀는 모두 어려움을 겪고 있었는데, 자녀는 관심분야가 무엇인지 막연함을 느끼고 있었고, 부모는 진로 관련 정보를 찾는데 어려움을 느끼고 있었다. 이와 함께 부모들은 사춘기 자녀를 위한 정서적 지지에도 어려움을 느끼고 있었으며, 자녀들도 부모와 깊이 있는 공감 형성을 어려워하고 있었다. 끝으로 중학생 자녀의 진로탐색 과정에서 부모의 진로지지는 부모와 자녀 상호간에 수용 가능한 방식으로 이루어지는 것이 바람직함을 제안하였으며 이를 위해서는 부모와 자녀간의 원만한 관계 형성이 우선적으로 이루어질 필요가 있다는 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to investigate the mutual perceptions between parents and their middle school children in the process of career exploration and parents’ support. For this, in-depth interviews were conducted with seven sets of parents and their middle school children. First, differentiated levels of perception appeared between parents and their children in terms of desired future career exploration. There were parents-child difference in terms of options to actualize a agreed future career, additional skills or areas to secure stable future career, reference resources influencing children’s career plan, and desired future career. In terms of mutual perceptions on career support, parents tend to provide comprehensive support without escaping a big picture which parents want for their children. Although children show positive response to their parents’ support, they feel burden because of parents’ interests and focus on academic achievement. while both parents and children felt difficulty in relation to career path exploration, children felt vague in terms of their career interests and parents felt difficulty finding career information. In addition, parents felt difficulty in emotional support for their adolescent children, while children reveal empathetic difficulty with their parents. In sum, parents’ career support should be able to be provided in the way that both parents and children can accept. For this, it is suggested that harmonious relationships between parents and children need to be developed first.
