영문 초록

The UNCLOS(United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) has given numerous advantages in East Asia. The countries in the region, however, has not arrived yet at the consensus to achieve the common goal. Constructing regional maritime regime is the key to make UNCLOS work in the region. In addition, maritime regime facilitates cooperation which is necessary to build East Asian Community in the future. Ocean as an issue area is convenient to negotiate with each other than economic and security area. This is the main reason why maritime regime is needed the region other than economic and security regime. United States is also less sensitive in maritime cooperation between East Asian countries than regional cooperation in economic and security area. Comparative analysis between maritime, economic and security regime is designed to show the conditional and limited relevance of regional cooperation in maritime area. This study also shows that the efforts to make regional identification and confidence building as well as maritime regime is more important than the construction of imagined community in East Asia.
