방각본 <조웅전>의 원천

국문 초록

<조웅전>은 다른 고소설과 마찬가지로 작자와 창작시기는 알 수 없다. 현재 여러 종의 경판 본과 완판본 이본이 있고, 수많은 필사본이 전하 며, 활판본도 상당수가 있다. 이렇게 많은 이본이 있다는 사실은 <조웅전>의 높은 인기를 반영 하는 것인데, 이 작품이 세책으로도 유통되었는 지에 대해서는 그동안 알려진 바가 없었다. 근래 세책 장부의 조사를 통해 적어도 9책 이상인 세책 <조웅전>의 존재가 알려졌고, 또 단국대학교 율곡기념도서관에는 전체 7책 중 한 책만 남은 세책도 있다. 이 논문에서는 이 세책을 검토해서 최초의 <조웅전>은 서울의 세책집에서 만든 것이고, 경판본과 완판본은 세책을 축약해서 제작한 것임을 밝혔다. 그리고 1910년대에 간행된 활판본 <조웅전>은 완판본을 저본으로 만든 것이 라는 점도 확인했다. 지금까지 경판과 완판 <조 웅전> 각각의 계통을 밝힌 연구는 있었지만, 경판본과 완판본의 원천이 무엇인가를 찾아보려는 연구는 없었다. 경판본과 완판본 <조웅전>의 원천이 세책이라는 것이 밝혀졌으므로, 이 논문의 결과를 다른 고소설로 확대시킨다면, 방각본의 원천이 세책이라는 점이 분명해질 것이다.

영문 초록

Jowoong-Jeon, one of the old novels written in Korean, has been handed down in numerous forms. Its writer and the time of writing have been unknown alike the cases of other old novels. There remain several types of Gyeongpan and different versions of Wanpan, a large number of manuscripts, and a considerable number of typographic versions. Such a large number of different versions indicates the popularity of Jowoong-Jeon. Nevertheless, there has been no light shed on its relationship with lending library until recently. However, the existence of lending library version of Jowoong-Jeon which was composed of nine volumes at least, has become known by recent research on the account books of lending library. Also, there remains one volume (out of seven in total) of lending library version in the Dankook University Yulkok Memorial Library. By examining these lending library versions, this paper has succeeded in elucidating the following points; Firstly, Jowoong-Jeon was written by lending library in Seoul. Secondly, the Gyeongpan and Wanpan of the piece are the abridged versions of lending library book in Seoul. Lastly, the original text of the typographic version in the 1910 s was the Wanpan. Until now, there have only been researches which focused on explaining each branches of the Gyeongpan and Wanpan Jowoong-Jeon, but the question on their origin has never been asked. This paper has made it clear that the origin of the Gyeongpan and Wanpan Jowoong-Jeon is lending library book. By amplifying this result to the other cases of old novels, it would become evident that the origin of commercial woodblock book was lending library book.
