뮤지컬 넘버 배치와 플롯의 상관관계에 대한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 뮤지컬 「웨스트 사이드 스토리」를 통하여 어떻게 드라마 형성소들이 다층적으로 그려져 있는지 분석한다. 이와 동시에 뮤지컬 내 다양한 형태로 구성되어 있는 넘버의 배치가 어떠한 미적효과를 가져오는지를 증명하는 데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 뮤지컬에서 넘버는 그 자체만으로도 서사가 진행이 되며, 그 배치에 따라 극적 기능을 달리한다. 즉, 뮤지컬 넘버 그 자체가 플롯으로서의 역할을 한다. 극적 분위기를 암시하고, 주인공의 심경을 표현하며, 극적 갈등 인자인 동시에 극적 회복의 기능을 지니는 등 스토리가 아닌 플롯으로서의 기능을 지니는 것이다. 특히 ‘투나잇-오중창’의 경우, 공간분할을 통해 표현되는 다섯 가지의 욕망의 대립으로 인하여, 극적 긴장감을 극도로 상승시켜 작품의 클라이맥스 역할을 지닌다. 하나의 넘버 안에서 다섯 가지의 이야기를 분리시키고, 그것을 유기적으로 연결시킴으로서 한 작품이 시사하는 테마와 목적을 드러낸다. 결론적으로, 본 논문을 통해 뮤지컬의 넘버가 플롯으로서 어떻게 역할을 하느냐에 따라 극의 완성도가 결정된다는 사실을 밝히고자 한다. 또한 이 연구를 통하여 향후 뮤지컬 넘버와 플롯을 구조화시키는 데 길잡이역할을 하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This research is intended to analyze the formative elements of drama — weaved in a multi-dimensional manner — in the lens of 「West Side Story」. The other purpose of this research is to prove how the placing of musical numbers in various forms can exert an aesthetic influence on the work. In musical, numbers speak (‘narrate’ would be a better word in the context of this research) for themselves, and depending on where and how they are placed, the impact of the drama varies. In other words, numbers in musical serve the function of a plot rather than that of a story. Numbers hint to the atmosphere of designated scenes, and resonate the characters’ inner voice. And while they plant and grow the seeds of drama and conflict, numbers also provide the resolution and the cure. ‘Tonight-Quintet’ makes it very evident how the piece reaches its climax from the escalated tension amongst five conflicting desires, expressed in separate dimensions. Separating five plots within one number and connecting them organically, does define the theme and purpose of the piece, in our case, 「West Side Story」. At the end of this document, readers will be able to see that the overall quality of a musical really depends on how well the numbers serve their purpose as a plot. We also want this research to serve as a guidance and framework to structure numbers and plots for musicals hereafter.
