국문 초록

이 논문은 자연에 대한 지각적 감수성이 풍부하게 발달하는 초등교육단계에서의 생태적 접근을 위해 최근 관심을 모으는 생태학적 담론들의 사상적ㆍ실천적 의미를 밝혀보려는 시도이다. 생태 위기에 대한 문제의식이 높아지면서 자연과 생명의 가치를 가르치기 위해 다양한 환경교육 프로그램들이 도입되고 있지만, 근본적으로 생태적 접근의 목적과 가치에 대한 교육철학적 이해가 요구된다. 이를 위해 생태주의 철학을 형성해온 주요 흐름의 사상적 특징을 개괄하고, 심층생태주의(deep ecology) 사상에 중점을 두어 초등교육에 주는 시사점을 탐구한다. 심층생태주의는 생태 위기의 근본원인과 극복방안에 대해 사회생태주의와 생태여성주의 등과 쟁론하면서 생태학적 담론이 환경운동 범주를 넘어 철학 체계로 발전하는 계기를 마련하였다. 생태철학자 네스(Arne Naess)의 사상에서 뿌리내린 심층생태주의의 특징은 생태중심의 전체론적 세계관, 방법론으로서의 생태지혜, 목적과 과정으로서 큰 자아실현으로 요약된다. 이로부터 초등교육의 목표로 큰 자아실현을 위한 생태적 감수성 도야를, 구체적 실천 방안으로 교육과정 관점의 생태적 전환, 교과내용의 통합적 재구성, 주제중심 체험활동 프로그램의 활용을 제안한다.

영문 초록

Recently in educational discourses searching for alternative paradigms, we may find increasing interests in the eastern and western ecological thoughts, which had been originally elaborated as intelligent responses to ecological crises in this era. This study aims at getting better understanding of ecological thoughts with respect to their educative meanings and practical implications for elementary education, focused on deep ecological thought that had been established by a Norwegian philosopher, Arne Naess. Deep ecology is selected because it has been considered as the first systematic eco-philosophy with well-thought-out visions for the harmonious relationship of human beings in and with the world. To begin with, we deals with the background and characteristic traits of diverse ecological thoughts in general. Secondly, it is shown that deep ecological thought is distinctive in three respects: the relational holistic world view, ecological wisdom or eco-sophy as the methodological constructive tool, and the Self-realization as the ultimate and progressive objective. Finally, inferred from the distinctive traits, we suggest that ecological sensibility be a new objective of elementary school education as an initial stage toward Self-realization, and that concrete practical approach consist of ecological transformation of curriculum goals, integration and reconstruction of school subject matters, and experience-based, topic-based integrative activities.
