국문 초록

이 연구는 국가 간 자유무역협정 체결 연결망 분석을 통해 시장 통합의 사회구조를 파악하는 것을 주목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 1957년부터 2009년까지 국가 간 자유무역협정 연결망의 시기적 변화를 통해 전지구적 시장의 통합 과정을 경험적으로 분석하고, 이 과정에서 나타나는 분절의 차원을 분석했다. 중요 결과를 요약하면, 첫째, 1950년대 이후 2009년까지 자유무역협정 연결망은 전 세계가 하나의 연결망으로 통합되어가는 과정을 보여준다. 둘째, 이런 전반적 통합 경향에도 불구하고, 여전히 지역적 분절이 중요한 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 세계체제론은 전지구적 시장에서 중심부, 반주변부, 주변부 국가 간 위계적 분절을 주장한다. 이를 자유무역협정 연결망에 적용한 결과, 세계체제론의 예측대로 중심부 국가들은 반주변부, 주변부 국가들과 시장을 통합하는 반면, 주변부 국가들은 상위 수준 국가들과 시장 통합을 하지만, 다른 주변부 국가들과는 시장 통합을 하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이런 결과는 자유무역협정을 통한 전 지구적 시장 통합에서 여전히 국가 간 경제적 위계가 유지되고 있다는 것을 시사한다. 결과적으로 자유무역협정 체결을 통한 시장 통합에서 지리적 통합은 강화되고 있지만, 시장 통합의 구조는 선진국이 통합의 중심에 있고, 개발도상국들은 주변부에 위치하는 위계적 통합 경향을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study is to examine the social structure of global market integration of countries by a network analysis of free trade agreements (FTA). Free trade agreements represent an institutionalization of market integration by creating new rules and adjusting existing domestic rules to integrate markets between countries. Such type of market integration has been increasingly a key part of economic globalization in recent periods. Existing arguments on market integration due to globalization of economics can be distinguished between universal and fragmented integration. Universal integration refers to even and dense integration across countries, while fragmented integration refers to uneven and sparse integration. Fragmented integration can be distinguished between regional and hierarchical integration. Regional integration refers to integration of markets between countries within the same region, but not across regions, while hierarchical integration discusses integration of markets between core and periphery countries, based on the world system theory. In this study, to understand the nature of market integration, we provided a longitudinal analysis of free trade agreement networks from 1957 to 2009. The key findings are as follows. First, there has been global market integration through increasing number of free trade agreements across countries. Second, as a large number of non-Western countries joined market integration, we have witnessed market integration across regions. However, regional market integration, particularly in Europe, is still important. Third, core countries have dominated global market integration by agreements with other core and periphery countries. Periphery countries have integrated their markets with core countries, but not in the same extent with other periphery countries. This suggests that global market integration has weakened regional barriers while strengthening economic hierarchies across countries at the same time.
