The [Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara] is the painting which owns the museun of Dongguk university but it had enshrined in Hall of Avalokiteśvara(관음전) at Haein-Temple originally.
In the late of Joseon Dynasty the Buddism is become popular.
The Buddihist scriptures that related the saying of Buddha and Dharani spreaded a lot.
The Buddhist Goddess of Mercy has character that he saves people in the world so it is growed popular especially.
[Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara in Avalokiteśvara's big house(관음전) at Haein-Temple] which owns Dongguk university reflected this historical background very well.
This painting was set the Avalokiteśvara who hugs baby in the middle of the big bright circle.
In the upper of the big bright circle it was written [The Avalokiteśvara Dharani Sutra of Buddha's Essance]'s the saying of Buddha with white color painting in the dark paper by Sanskrit characters.
On the other hands in the bottom it was stated date of painting, the Monk Painter(畵師) and making background.
First look at the painting in the big bright circle.
It described that Avalokiteśvara who wears white robe hugs a baby.
The icon which [White-robed Avalokiteśvara as deity granting male offspring] is popular in the China.
The Buddihist scriptures described the white-robed Avalokiteśvara gives a baby to someone who wishes a baby. That is why the icon is popular and possible to verify Woodblock-printed Book with Engraving in the china.
The icon is named [the White-robed Avalokiteśvara] in the Samjaedohoi and [Water-Moon Avalokiteśvara in Avalokiteśvara's big house(관음전) at Haein-Temple] is painted based on this story. This icon is appeared mural painting or on the under drawing of the Buddhist painting at Enhae-temple (은해사) or Tongdo-temple(통도사).
The icon which is [the White-robed Avalokiteśvara] seemed popular in near by Gyensangdo(경상도).
On the other hands the Suryong Dae-jun is Gi-jun. It means he has both names.(One is that called Buddism's name(법명), other is normal name.)
He was a monk painter and worked based on the HaeIn-temple near by Gyensangdo(경상도) in the late 19th century.
This painting is painted by Dae-jun by himself.
It shows Dae-Jun wrote Yanggong in the Picture Writings, it seems that he rose a high level when this painting's
