국문 초록
The advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution has ushered in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and big data, prompting a paradigm shift in how humans interact with non-human entities. In response, the fields of art and design are increasingly required to transcend anthropocentric world views, moving toward new forms of creative expression that integrate human and non-human, nature and artificiality, life and the inanimate. Against this backdrop, this study aims to explore a future-oriented design methodology that synthesizes nature, humanity, and computational technology. The research focuses on the development of stool designs using the Grasshopper algorithm, with particular emphasis on the formal and structural motifs of columnar joints. The study begins with a comprehensive theoretical framework, examining both the Grasshopper algorithm and columnar joints in terms of their definitions, formal characteristics, and precedents in design applications. Based on this theoretical foundation, the empirical phase of the research involves the design of a stool inspired by the columnar joints of the Hantan River in Cheorwon. The entire design process is systematically documented, from conceptual development to digital modeling. A key contribution of this research lies in its use of parametric design techniques to reinterpret the geometric structure of columnar joints into fluid, curvilinear forms, which are then algorithmically optimized and translated into fabrication-ready documentation. The resulting design embodies both aesthetic sophistication and functional integrity. This study contributes to the discourse on computational design by demonstrating how natural motifs can be algorithmically reimagined and materialized through digital fabrication processes. It offers a novel methodological approach for integrating biomimicry, algorithmic thinking, and functional design, thereby establishing a foundational reference for future theoretical and practice-based research in parametric furniture design.
