The revised secondary education curriculum in 2022 requires various changes in school space. In particular, middle school students are in a period of rapid physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development, and it is necessary to effectively foster students' autonomy, identity, sociality, and emotional control skills through active space composition that reflects these characteristics. Therefore, changes in external space are important along with changes in indoor space. In this study, we investigated and analyzed the external space composition and the status of public facilities used for various activities and productions in external spaces in Canadian middle schools that value the healthy development, autonomy, sustainability, and eco-friendly values of middle school students. Through this, we sought to find various alternatives to increase the eco-friendliness of the external space composition of middle schools. Accordingly, we examined the external space composition and installed public facilities centered on six eco-friendly middle schools in Canada, analyzed the types, and investigated which facilities were reflected in an eco-friendly way. When checking the overall number of applications for facilities with different design types by target area as a result of the investigation, it was applied in the following order: supply facilities (225) > road facilities (154) > convenience facilities (71) > play facilities (55) > environmental facilities (30) > others (15). When checking the application ratio of each facility, supply facilities were 68.1%, road facilities 58.8%, convenience facilities 57.6%, U-City related facilities 50.0%, environmental facilities 47.9%, and play facilities 44.4%. By detailed facility, the application rate was investigated as management facilities 88.4%, information facilities 72.2%, boundary facilities 66.7%, lighting facilities 62.5%, rest facilities and protection facilities 61.1%, landscape facilities 58.3%, transportation facilities 55.6%, passage facilities 54.8%, sanitation facilities 53.3%, service facilities 52.4%, sports facilities and U-City related facilities 50.0%, green facilities 37.5%, and play facilities 33.3% in that order. And the most frequently installed facility was road signs, and benches and sports facilities were investigated as having the most diverse design types. And the most important planning element in the application of public facilities is the infrastructure maintenance aspect, and the important eco-friendly planning elements were investigated as environmental friendliness, nature-friendliness, simplicity, and universality centered on integration with nature.
