It is wrong to accept what China is saying about Liaoyang being the old Xiangping without questioning, comparing, analyzing and investigating.
It is believed that Xiangping came into being by King Zhao(昭. BC312-279)in the Yan dynasty of Chunqiuzhanguo(春秋戰國) and it lasted till A.D. 581, the Sui dynasty. It was known that Xiangping lasted for more than 850years.
Liaoyang, where China considered as the old Xiangping was the name that came into being in the Tang(唐) dynasty.
The Tang dynasty, after invading Goguryu, built Andongdouhufu(安東都護府) in the capital of Goguryu, Pyongyang. Andongdouhufu was moved to Liaodong, current Liaoyang in Tang shangyuan(上元.year 676) and it has continued to exist till now.
The fact that “Liaoyang=Xiangping” is true or not can change the whole history for the east-north part of ancient China and also it can produce further error in the future.
Therefore although it is little too late, analyzing and investigating of this matter are essential.
The possibility that today’s Liaoyang is the old Xiangping, as mentioned above, is very low.
Believing some of the records including Xin tang shu without any investigation and keeping the theory that “Liaoyang=the old Xiangping” can distort the history.
It is suspected that due to the wrong record from the Xin tang shu that people started to believe that current Liaoyang from the Tang dynasty is the old Xiangping.
Andongdouhufu was first built in Pyongyang but it was moved to Liaoyang and to Lulong. While it was moving, we suspect tha t Xintangshu made the mistake and recorded Liaoyang Andongdouhufu in stead of Lulong Andongdouhufu. From that record, the belief that “Liaoyang=the old Xianping” was born.
The location of Xiang ping is especially important since from the Yan dynasty to Qin(秦) dynasty, it was the military city in the east side of the Great wall. Also it was located in the border of the Han dynasty and Gojoseon.
There is still a debate where was the exact location of the border for Gojosun. This is one of the most sensitive issues when studying the ancient history of Korea and China.
I expect this paper to activate the further study on finding Xianping’s current location.
