In the Chungmakdong Ritual Site of west coast Paekche, miniature stone goods from around late 5th century and early 6th century, such as iron axes, knives, and armors were found. These types of relics are one kind of Wa-style relics for memorial services which had been very popular in Wa at the time. Therefore, the discovery of these Wa-style miniature stone goods in the Chungmakdong Ritual Site strongly suggests the possibility of Wa-style memorial services performed here by the ambassadors or merchants from Wa. In this ritual site, besides the Wa-style miniature stone goods, relics of international features such as celadons of Southern Dynasties style and Tae-Kaya-style horse ornaments were found as well. In this respect, among the people who participated in the Chungmakdong memorial services, there might have been people with diverse nationalities who participated in the trade with Paekche, such as people from the Southern Dynasties, people from Tae-Kaya, and Wa people. It also means that international trading ships were included among the ships anchored in nearby harbors, to attend the memorial service held here. The ambassadors or merchants attending the Chungmakdong memorial ritual from different countries may have witnessed the Wa-style memorial ritual performed by the Wa people. Reflecting the intimate relationship between Paekche and Wa, this scene of memorial service may have been widely known to neighboring countries through the ambassadors or merchants from various countries. The Wa-style memorial service held at the Chungmakdong Ritual Site during the late 5th century and early 6th century is presumed to be a ceremony to display the intimate relationship between Paekche and Wa. It can be seen as one of the diplomatic strategies of Paekche and Wa, to prevent the threat from Koguryeo.
