The roads for trading among the three main countries in ancient East Asia were not only for international commerce but also for cultural exchange. The three countries, which were ancient Korea, China and Japan, could form a unique East Asian cultural area with the mutual exchange through these trading roads. As the buddhist religion exchange was also carried out through the trading roads, I would like to look into the routes the Shilla monks made to China to find out what the monks had done there in this study.   There wasn"t just one reason of searching canon to go to China for the plenty of the buddhist priests of Shilla. Going and searching canon in China didn"t contain only religious aspect but cultural, political, trading and many other aspects. The ways used for the monks" activities are now concerned very important for studying the systematic interchange of the ancient Asia and for looking into the essence of the ancient East Asian history.   There have been two ways from Korea to China: by sea and by land. This study concerns the seaways and itineraries in China. The sea routes were used more often than the land routes from early time, for they could shorten the travel time and be less affected by other countries.   There are two records: one is about Kak-Duck(覺德)‘scoming back from Yang(梁) of Southern Dynasty(南朝) ending his searching canon in tenth year of the King JinHeung(549), and the other is about Myung-Kwan(明觀)’s coming back to Shilla around that time. They both came by sea and it proved the sea routes had developed earlier.   There were 4 ways to enter Tang(唐),   The first one was through the Yellow Sea from Dang-Eun-Po(唐恩浦) or Heui-Jin(會津) to Shandong(山東) peninsular or Jhejiang(浙江省) area.   The second one was by land from Deng Zhou(登州) to Chang An(長安) or Wu Tai Shan(五臺山) or southern area both by sea and by land to study in the buddhist temples in the area.   The location of Shillawon(新羅院) and Shillabang(新羅坊) can probably be helpful to research the route of the Shilla"s monks.   What the monks had done will be estimated correctly by a brisk investigaton. We will find out what they"d done and the effects from and to China. The study of the entering ways and the iteneraries of the monks demands close investigation to see what they had done in China.
