국문 초록

  독일, 프랑스, 일본, 영국의 미국대비 실질환율은 1973~1994년 기간동안 매우 유사한 움직임을 보였다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 유사 움직임이 어떤 경제적 요인에 의해 설명될 수 있는지를 연구한다. 개별 국가의 실질환율을 영구적 요소와 일시적 요소로 분리하면서 이들 실질환율들 간의 상관성을 고려한 모형을 설정한다. Kalman filter 방식을 적용하여 모형을 추정한 결과, 실질환율들의 움직임을 결정하는 대부분의 요인이 영구적 요소임을 알게 되었다. 또한 이들 영구적 요소들간의 상관계수가 매우 높게 추정되어, 실질환율들 간의 유사 움직임이 다시 확인된다. 이들 영구적 요소를 결정짓는 요인을 찾기 위해 공급요인모형, 수요요인모형, 통화요인모형 등을 검증하였고, 이중 통화요인이 영구적 요소를 결정짓는 주요 요인이라는 것을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

  The US-based real exchange rates of Germany, France, Japan and UK show long swings in the period of 1973 through 1994. This paper studies what explains the similar pattern of movements in the real exchange rates of the countries. To do this, we first decompose the real exchange rates into the permanent component and transitory component in a system of equations incorporating the apparent correlations between the real exchange rates. After finding that the permanent components take most of the movements in the real exchange rates and their correlations are very strong, we proceed to determine what causes the permanent deviation from PPP. We examine both supply-factor and demand-factor models, and also a monetary model on empirical grounds. Interestingly, monetary factors have permanent and worldwide effects.
