국문 초록

槪念을 이해하기 위해서는 範疇表象의 構造나 範疇化 過程에 대한 연구도 필요하지만 범주학습과정에 대한 이해가 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 범주학습의 기초가 되는 범주의 내적 구조에 대해 살펴보고 범주화 모형들의 가정을 학습이라는 측면에서 검토하였다. 즉 範疇化(categorization)라는 심리적 현상이 실재하는 범주구조에 바탕을 두고 있는 것인지와 관련된 논쟁을 통해 범주구조가 범주학습에 미치는 제약들을 제시하고, 범주화 과정에 대한 기본적인 가정에서 뚜렷하게 구분되는 범주화 모형인 본보기 모형과 원형모형을 범주학습의 측면에서 검토하여 그동안 계속되어 왔던 이론적 논쟁이 왜 해결되기 어려웠는지를 살펴보았다. 결과적으로 범주화 모형의 한계들은 범주학습을 原形의 抽出過程이나 引出過程만으로 설명하려 하기 때문에 나타나는 것으로 보인다. 이러한 측면에서 최근에 시도되고 있는 折衷的 接近은 학습과정에 대한 초보적 발견에 기초하여 기존의 범주화 모형들을 새롭게 통합해보려는 시도이다. 이 논문에서는 혼합표상에 의한 折衷的 接近을 지지하는 등.들과 그 한계를 살펴보고 그것이 범주화에 대한 적절한 대안이 될 수 있는지를 검토하였다.

영문 초록

The present study aims to examine basic assumptions of existing categorization models from the viewpoint of learning processes and to search for an alternative based on mixed representations. First of all, several constraints of category learning are discussed along important aspects of category structure. And some theoretical and empirical issues on Prototype models and Exemplar model are investigated in details. Then this study points out some procedural problerr , such as differential effects of learning strategies, and theoretical vagueness of experimental designs as the reason why empirical model testings so far have been fruitless. In conclusion, categorization processes are too complex to be exclusively explained by either exemplar retrieval or prototype abstraction alone. So, this study proposes a hybrid approach based on mixed representations which includes exemplar information and prototype information as a prospective alternative, even though it has many limitations.
