현대미술에 표현된 젠더리스의 심리적 의미: 신디 셔먼, 질리언 웨어링, 그레이슨 페리의 작품을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 현대미술에 나타난 젠더리스 표현이 개인의 심리적 경험과 정체성 탐색에 어떤 의미를 갖는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 신디 셔먼, 질리언 웨어링, 그레이슨 페리의 주요 작업을 중심으로 젠더리스 표현의 심리기제를 탐색하였다. 분석 방법은 질적 문헌연구로, 작품 이미지, 작가 인터뷰, 전시 비평, 선행연구 자료를 종합․ 범주화하고 교차 검토하였다. 연구 결과, 젠더리스 표현은 ‘드러내기 위한 숨김의 페르소나', ‘고정된 성역할에 대한 심리적 저항’, ‘심리적 안정의 중간대상’라는 세 가지 범주로 도출되었다. 이러한 표현은 감정 조절, 자아 탐색, 정체성 회복의 기제로 작용하며 예술적 승화를 통한 심리적 안정감을 유도하였다. 특히 가면 쓰기, 자화상 표현, 상징적 오브제 사용은 미술치료 장면에서 정체성 탐색과 감정 외현화의 도구로 활용 가능성을 보였다. 본 연구는 예술과 심리학의 접점을 확장하며, 젠더 표현을 상담적 개입 가능성과 연결하는 이론적 토대를 제공한다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 의의와 제한점에 대하여 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This study exploresd the psychological implications of genderless expressions in contemporary art, focusing on the works of Cindy Sherman, Gillian Wearing, and Grayson Perry. Using a qualitative literature analysis, the study examinesd artworks, artist interviews, exhibition critiques, and prior research to identify core psychological mechanisms. Three thematic categories emerged: “self-protection through persona,” “psychological resistance to fixed gender roles,” and “genderless expression as a transitional object.” These artistic strategies served as symbolic devices for emotional regulation, identity exploration, and psychological integration. The use of masks, self-portraits, and symbolic objects demonstrated therapeutic potential in visualizing inner conflicts and facilitating self-reflection. The findings suggested that the genderless expression could function as a psychological tool within art therapy, especially for clients struggling with identity, emotional articulation, or rigid gender norms. This research contributesd to the interdisciplinary dialogue between art, psychology, and gender studies, offering an integrative framework for therapeutic application. Based on these findings, the significance and limitations of this study were discussed.
