국문 초록

본 연구는 생애 후반기에 박사과정이라는 형식교육에 참여한 연구자가 자신의 경험을 자전적 내러티브 방식으로 탐구하여, 성인학습의 존재론적 전환을 자아초월적 학습의 관점에서 조명하였다. 평균수명의 연장과 중․노년 인구의 확대는 자기성찰과 삶의 의미 재구성을 요구하며, 이는 단순한 기능 습득을 넘어 존재론적 변화를 수반할 수 있다. 본 연구는 연구 참여자인 연구자가 박사과정 진입 여정에서 겪은 혼돈과 불안, 자기 이해의 해체와 재구성 과정을 서사적으로 분석하였고, 이를 복잡계 이론의 개념인 초기조건의 민감성, 자기조직화, 창발과 연결하여 해석하였다. 분석 결과, 학습 과정 중 작은 변화들이 누적되다가 어느 순간 되돌릴 수 없는 창발적 전환으로 표면화되었으며 그 과정은 기존 정체성의 해체, 혼돈 속 자기조직화, 새로운 의미 질서의 출현이라는 단계로 전개되었다. 이러한 비가역적 변화는 성인학습이 기능 습득을 넘어 삶 전체를 다시 구성하는 과정임을 보여준다. 나아가 자아초월은 고정된 상태가 아니라, 내면의 리듬과 제도적 구조가 상호작용하며 지속적으로 재조직되는 운동적 과정임을 드러낸다. 또한, 본 연구는 형식교육이 지닌 복잡계적 가능성을 조명함으로써, 생애 후반기 성인의 자아초월적 학습을 촉진함을 보여준다. 이는 성인학습 연구의 이론적 지평을 확장할 뿐 아니라, 교육 실천에서도 형식교육의 생태적 의미를 새롭게 제시한다.

영문 초록

This study explores the researcher’s experience of entering a doctoral program in later adulthood through an autobiographical narrative inquiry, illuminating the ontological transformation of adult learning from a self-transcendent perspective. As life expectancy rises and mid-to-late adulthood expands, adults increasingly seek self-reflection and reconstruction of life meaning beyond functional skill acquisition. Interpreting the experiences of chaos, anxiety, self-dissolution, and reorganization through the lens of complexity theory, the researcher analyzed her learning journey in relation to sensitivity to initial conditions, self-organization, and emergence. The analysis revealed that small experiential shifts accumulated into an irreversible transformation unfolding through the dissolution of prior identity, self-organization within chaos, and the emergence of new meaning. Such change shows that adult learning reconstructs one’s existence rather than merely developing competence. Furthermore, self-transcendence is not a fixed state but a dynamic and continually reorganizing process where inner rhythms interact with institutional structures. By illuminating the complex-systemic potential of formal education, this study shows that formal education can foster self-transcendent learning in later adulthood, broadening theoretical understanding and redefining its ecological significance for educational practice.
