국문 초록

이 연구는「죽음의 배움학」강의를 통해 이루어진 죽음교육이 원예치료사의 정체성과 전문성 발달에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 내러티브 탐구 방법론을 적용하였으며, 해당 강의를 수강한 10년 이상의 상담 경력을 지닌 한명의 원예치료사를 연구 참여자로 선정하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째,「죽음의 배움학」은 참여자가 목표 중심적 관점에서 벗어나 ‘지금-여기’의 순간에 집중하며, 과정 중심적 태도를 형성하는 전환점이 되었다. 둘째, 상담에서 공감과 수용의 태도가 강화되었고, 내담자의 감정을 존중하며 유연한 치료적 개입을 실천하게 되었다. 셋째, 죽음교육은 삶의 우선순위와 가족 및 인간관계의 가치를 재조명하게 하였고, 이는 상담자로서의 자기 성찰과 관계적 태도의 변화를 이끌었다. 이 연구는 죽음교육이 단순한 지식 전달을 넘어, 상담자의 정체성과 실천적 전문성에 깊이 있는 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 보여준다. 특히,「죽음의 배움학」과 같은 체화된 배움의 경험이 상담자 자신의 내면 성장뿐 아니라, 내담자와의 관계에서 더 깊은 공감과 회복을 가능하게 함을 시사한다. 따라서 상담 현장에서 죽음교육이 보다 적극적으로 활용될 필요성을 제안한다.

영문 초록

This study explores how death education, delivered through the course ‘The Andragogy of Death’, influenced the identity and therapeutic orientation of a horticultural therapist. Using narrative inquiry methodology, the study focused on a participant with over ten years of counseling experience who completed the course. The findings reveal three major shifts. First, the participant moved from a goal-driven mindset to a process-centered approach, embracing the “here and now” in both personal life and counseling practice. Second, her ability to empathize and accept clients deepened, allowing for more flexible and emotionally attuned therapeutic engagement. Third, she reexamined her life priorities, placing greater value on relationships with family and clients, and cultivating a more balanced and relational approach to her roles. This study shows that death education can support meaningful growth in a counselor’s identity and practice. Rather than focusing solely on cognitive learning, ‘The Andragogy of Death’ offered embodied and reflective experiences that helped the participant engage more fully with her clients and herself. These findings suggest that integrating death education into counseling training may enrich the professional development of practitioners and foster deeper therapeutic relationships.
