The study of Neo-Confucianism during the Song and Ming dynasties represents one of the pinnacles of ancient Chinese intellectual history and holds significant research value. This paper analyzes the emotional theory within Confucianism, drawing upon the theoretical framework of Science of Feelings. In Science of Feelings, emotions are not merely external expressions or behaviors; instead, they are modifications of the body and the corresponding perceptions arising from them. This approach begins by investigating the origins of emotions to uncover their true essence, a methodology that aligns closely with the Confucian understanding of emotions.
Within the framework of Confucian philosophy, the inherent connection between emotions and the body is identified as 'Xing Qing Guan Xi', signifying that emotions are an expression of the body's intrinsic nature. This perspective demonstrates a remarkable congruence with the theories proposed by Spinoza and Science of Feelings. In particular Science of Feelings, emphasizes the concept of 'eternal infinitude', suggesting that everything about our current existence represents the most complete and optimal state of being. This encompasses both our bodies and our emotions—our bodies are the best possible bodies, and our emotions are the best possible emotions.
This study, grounded in the framework of Science of Feelings, reinterprets Confucian emotional theory from three perspectives. First, it examines the emotional theories of traditional Confucianism as represented by Confucius and Mencius. It argues for the eternal and infinite existence of one's inherent nature, asserting that emotions, as an extension of this nature, are likewise eternal and infinite in their existence. Second, it analyzes the emotional theories of Neo-Confucianism as represented by Zhou Dunyi and Zhang Zai. These thinkers, building upon traditional Confucian emotional theories, emphasized the instructive and practical dimensions of understanding emotions. Third, the study focuses on Cheng Yi's emotional theory and his work "Yan Zi Suo Hao He Xue Lun". It explores the relevant aspects of Cheng Yi's understanding of emotions and, by integrating insights from Science of Feelings, investigates the contributions and implications of his ideas for modern society. Throughout the analysis and exposition of these scholars' theories, this study incorporates numerous examples from both the past and the present to substantiate its arguments, striving to effectively integrate theory with practice.
This study ultimately demonstrates that the framework of Science of Feelings provides a new perspective for exploring Confucian emotional theory. Moreover, Confucian emotional theory exhibits a high degree of instructiveness and practicality, particularly in the Neo-Confucian thought of Cheng Yi. Cheng Yi's theory of emotional is closely linked to the construction of modern societal thought, suggesting that a deeper exploration of his ideas could offer further contributions to the development of contemporary society.
The research significance of this study lies in three main aspects: Introducing Science of Feelings into Confucian Emotional Understanding: By integrating Science of Feelings into the study of Confucian emotional theory, this research fosters a cross-cultural exchange that transcends temporal and spatial boundaries. Highlighting Modern Ethical Implications: Through theoretical analysis and practical examples, the study affirms that Confucian emotional theory holds significant relevance for modern ethical thought. Proposing New Possibilities for Confucian Emotional Theory: By intersecting Eastern and Western philosophies, the study offers a novel perspective on Confucian emotional understanding, paving the way for fresh approaches to exploring Confucian emotional theory.
