국문 초록

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal medicine in reducing body weight and improving obesity-related parameters in overweight or obese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: This retrospective, multi-center study involved 40 RA patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 23 kg/m2 who received herbal medicine treatment for 90 days. Body composition parameters, including body weight, BMI, body fat mass (BFM), and percent body fat (PBF), were measured pre- and post-treatment using bioelectrical impedance analysis. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure and heart rate (HR) were also assessed. Adverse events were classified by severity and causality. Results: After 90 days of treatment, body weight decreased by 6.68±3.88 kg (P<0.001), and BMI by 2.60±1.46 kg/m2 (P<0.001), both exceeding the minimal clinically important difference thresholds. Significant changes in BFM and PBF were also observed (P<0.001). Systolic blood pressure significantly decreased (P<0.001), and HR increased slightly but remained within normal limits. Mild adverse reactions, including constipation and palpitations, were observed in 13 patients (32.5%) and resolved with dose adjustments. Conclusions: Herbal medicine effectively reduced body weight and BMI in overweight and obese RA patients. These findings suggest herbal treatment as a potentially safe and effective option for obesity management in RA patients, though further studies are needed to evaluate long-term effects and impact on inflammation.
