국문 초록

본 논문은 자막 번역의 멀티모달 특성을 탐구하며, 자막이 단순한 문자 기반 번역이 아니라 언어적, 시각적, 청각적 요소를 통합한 보다 넓은 체계의 일부로 이해되어야 함을 강조한다. 바츠코프스카(2011)는 시청각 텍스트에서 의미가 이러한 기호 양식들의 상호작용을 통해 형성된다고 주장하며, 이는 전통적인 번역 모델에서 종종 간과되는 부분이라고 지적한다. 본 논문은 바츠코프스카(2011)의 연구를 바탕으로 논문에서 분석한 데이터에 한국어 자막 데이터를 추가함으로써 그 논의를 확장하고자 한다. 자막 번역가는 언어적 정확성을 유지하는 동시에 원본 텍스트의 멀티모달한 맥락에 적절히 대응해야 하며, 이 과정에서 말투, 몸짓, 표정, 소리 등의 요소를 모두 고려해야 한다. 바츠코프스카(2011)는 다양한 언어 사례를 분석하여 자막 번역가가 문화적과 맥락적 뉘앙스를 효과적으로 전달하기 위해 얼마나 복합적인 역할을 수행해야 하는지를 보여준다. 본 논문은 바츠코프스카(2011)의 분석을 바탕으로, 한국어 자막을 포함시켜 멀티모달 번역 연구에 기여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the multimodal nature of subtitling, emphasizing that subtitles function not just as text-based translations but as part of a broader system integrating verbal, visual, and auditory elements. Baczkowska(2011) highlights how meaning in audiovisual texts arises through the interaction of these semiotic modes—an aspect often overlooked in traditional translation models. Reviewing Baczkowska’s work, this paper expands the analysis by introducing Korean subtitle data, examining how subtitlers navigate the challenge of maintaining linguistic accuracy while adapting to the multimodal context of the source material. Elements such as tone, body language, facial expressions, and sound all play a role in shaping meaning. By analyzing multilingual examples, Baczkowska(2011) illustrates the subtitler’s complex task in mediating cultural and contextual nuances. Building on her insights, the present study contributes to this field by incorporating Korean subtitles into her original data set.
