연세대학교 송도 기숙형 대학 생활에 대한 학생들의 내러티브 분석

국문 초록

장소는 인간의 성장에 중요하다. 미국 아이비리그를 “한국 실정”에 맞게 기획해 ‘새로운’ 장소 송도캠퍼스에서 생활-학업 통합교육을 실행한 연세대학교 기숙형 대학(residential college, RC) 시행이 올해로 10년째다. 이 시점에서 학생들의 RC에서의 경험에 대한 이해는 향후 학습 장소로서의 송도캠퍼스를 재구성하는 데 매우 필요한 작업이다. 또한 이 작업은 연세대학교의 RC와 유사한 시도를 하고자 하는 다른 대학에도 필요한 통찰을 제공할 것이다. 재학생과 졸업생으로 구성된 12명의 연구참여자들은 인터뷰를 통해 송도캠퍼스를 벗어나 자주 신촌으로 오거나, 송도에서도 잦은 음주로 “시간의 낭비”를 일삼았다고 말한다. 이성애 관계는 “할 게 없는” 송도캠퍼스에서 때론 ‘불법적’ 행위에 연루되기도 한다. 학업에서도 학생들은 학교의 홍보 “삼중지도 시스템”과는 달리 “방치” 상태를 경험하기도 한다. 학생 규모에 턱없이 부족한 RM(residential master)·학사지도 교수로는 양질의 지도가 어렵기 때문이다. 연구자는 연세대가 집-학교-학원 등 ‘닫힌’ 공간에서 10대를 보낸 학생들의 경험을 “한국 실정”으로 포착하지 않았기에 또다시 ‘닫힌’ RC를 시행했다고 분석하고, 다양한 전공분야의 석박사과정생들이 교수자로 참여하는 ‘열린’ 기획을 제안한다. 학생들의 일상에 대한 양적연구와 RM·학사지도 교수에 대한 후속 연구도 제안한다. Place is central to human development. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Yonsei University’s Residential College (RC), which was designed to adapt the American Ivy League model to the “Korean situation” and implements integrated life-study education at the Songdo Campus, a “new place.” At this point, understanding students’ living and studying experiences at the RC is crucial for reconstructing the Songdo campus as a place of learning in the future. In addition, insights from these experiences can guide other universities considering similar RC models. Interviews with 12 research participants, consisting of current and former students, revealed challenges in adapting to the integrated life-study environment. The participants often left the Songdo campus for Shinchon or reported “wasting time” due to limited recreational options on the Songdo campus, which led to activities including drinking frequently and dating that sometimes involved “illegal” activities on the Songdo campus. Academically, students described feelings of “neglect” despite the school’s advertised “triple guidance system.” A shortage of residential masters (RMs) and academic advisors relative to the student body makes it difficult to provide quality life-study guidance. The researcher suggests that Yonsei University’s implementation of a ‘closed’ RC model reflects an insufficient acknowledgment of the ‘Korean reality’, where students have spent their teenage years in similarly restrictive environments like home-school-academy cycles. To address these limitations, the study proposes an ‘open’ RC model in which master’s and doctoral students from various fields of study participate as instructors. Further recommendations include conducting quantitative research on students' daily lives and follow-up studies on RMs and academic advisors.
