커밍아웃 : 탈북 대학생의 자기 드러내기 경험

국문 초록

이 논문은 탈북 대학생 3명의 자기 드러내기 경험을 내러티브 탐구(narrative inquiry) 방법으로 연구한 것이다. 연구 결과, 탈북 대학생이 자기를 드러내는 것은 타인과의 관계와 관련 있었는데, 탈북 대학생은 친밀하게 느껴지거나 친밀해지기를 원하는 사람에게 자신을 드러냈고, 그로 말미암아 관계가 좋아지기도 나빠지기도 했다. 탈북 대학생은 자신의 정체성이 확고할 때 자기를 적극적으로 드러냈고, 자기를 드러내는 과정을 통해 자신이 누구인지 더 잘 알게 되었다. 탈북 대학생의 자기 드러내기 경험은 시간과 공간성에 영향을 받는 순환 과정이었으며, 자기 드러내기 경험의 시간성과 공간성은 분절된 것이 아니라 서로 맞물려 있었다. 한편, 탈북 대학생이 북한에서 왔다는 것을 밝히는 것은 자신의 출신을 다른 사람에게 밝히는 행위만을 뜻하는 것이 아니었다. 이것은 삶의 방향과 동기를 확인하는 과정으로 나타났으므로, '드러내기'보다 '커밍아웃'이라는 용어로 표현하는 것이 적절했다. 탈북 대학생의 커밍아웃은 '타인과의 소통을 통해 자신의 정체성 찾아가는 연속 과정'이라고 할 수 있으며, 이것은 '남한 사회의 편견에 맞서 사회로 나오는 주체적이고 적극적인 행동의 시작'이라는 점에서 의미가 있다. This research studied the experience of self-disclosure among college students who fled from North Korea using the qualitative method of narrative inquiry. I have reconstructed the field texts of three students into research texts through narrative data analysis. The self-disclosure of college students who fled from North Korea was connected to their relationships with others. They disclosed themselves to people they felt or wanted to feel close to, and their relationships either improved or deteriorated as a result. Students with stronger identities tended to disclose themselves more actively, and came to know themselves better during the process. Their experience of self-disclosure was a circular process, influenced by space and time, which also affected itself. I found that the term 'self-disclosure', did not fully capture the students' experience of telling other people that they were originally from North Korea. They seem to more appropriate to use the term, 'coming out' to describe their experience. It was not just an act of revealing their country of origin, but also a process of finding direction and motivation in life. The 'coming out' of these students was a declaration of their self-identity and beginning of an independent and active life in South Korean society while also standing up to its prejudices.
