한국인 영어 학습자의 칭찬 화행 수행: 담화 완성 과제를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 한국인 학습자의 영어, 영어 원어민 화자의 영어, 한국어 원어민 화자의 한국어에서의 칭찬 화행의 수행과 칭찬 반응을 분석하고자 한다. 특히 본 연구에서는 담화 완성 과제를 사용하여 칭찬의 빈도수와 주제, 칭찬의 구문적 및 어휘적 특성, 그리고 칭찬 반응을 중심으로 분석하고자 한다. 칭찬 빈도수 분석 결과 한국인의 경우 한국어보다 영어에서 칭찬을 더 많이 하는 경향이 있었으며, 칭찬의 주제에 있어서 한국인 영어 학습자들은 수행 능력보다 외모에 대한 칭찬을 하는 경향이 있었다. 구문적 및 어휘적 특성 분석 결과도 한국인 영어 학습자들은 영어 원어민과 차별화되는 특성을 보였다. 마지막으로, 세 집단은 칭찬에 대한 반응에서 차이를 보였는데, 한국인 영어 학습자들은 짧고 단순한 반응을 하는 경향을 보인 반면 한국어와 영어 원어민은 길고 상세한 반응을 하는 경향을 보였다.

영문 초록

The present study investigates how Korean ESL (KESL) learners, native speakers of English (NE), and native speakers of Korean (NK) perform the speech act of realization of compliments and responses. By adopting discourse completion tasks, the study examines compliment behavior from the perspectives of frequency and topic of compliments, syntactic and lexical characteristics, and compliment response types. The results of the frequency analysis of the compliments indicated that KESL learners tended to use more compliments in English than in Korean. In terms of the compliment topics, KESL learners were more likely to compliment appearance than performance. The analysis of syntactic and lexical patterns used by the ESL learners demonstrated different patterns between KESL learners and native speakers. Lastly, the three groups showed different tendencies in accepting compliments; KESL learners tended to give brief and simple responses, whereas both English and Korean native speakers tended to give longer and more elaborate responses to compliments.
