국문 초록

이 연구는 캐나다에서 조기 유학 증인 세 명의 초등학생들의 유학 경험을 연구하였다. 세 초등학생은 유학을 ‘공부’보다는 ‘삶’으로 경험하였는데, 리아는 ‘살아남기’로, 캐티는 ‘정상적이지 않는 삶’으로, 사무엘은 ‘도전과 모험’으로 이야기 하였다. 당사자에게 유학은 처음에는 지금까지와는 다른 새로운 삶에 대한 특별한 경험이었으나, 시간이 지나면서 그것은 그들 일상에 늘 있었던 그런 보통 삶이 되었다. 그리고 이런 유학 생활의 경험으로 그들은 변하게 되었는데, 리아는 유학으로 ‘새로운 자신과 삶’을 찾게 되었고, 캐티는 유학이라는 ‘여행’을 마치고 모든 것이 ‘제자리’를 찾을 수 있는 귀국을 기다리게 되었다. 사무엘은 유학을 통해 ‘가족이 함께’하는 삶의 중요성을 깨달았고, 캐나다 생활을 보다 적극적으로 되었다. 세 초등학생의 유학 생활 경험에 비추어 볼 때, 조기유학은 ‘공부’보다는 ‘삶의 관점에서, 당사자들의 개인적 ·구체적 상황을 근거로, 기본적인 성장 환경의 부재에 대한 전제적 이해가 필요했다. This study was a narrative inquiry of three elementary school students' experiences in studying abroad. The three participants were Ria, Samuel, and Katie who were studying in E Public Schools in Canada. Their aim in studying abroad were English, good education, enjoying a new culture among others. Ria came to Canada to study English, however, she acquired a new life and study style. Because of this, she didn't want to go back. Samuel's family were immigrants. He renewed the concept of making friend and respecting people and learned their real meaning. Katie was accompanied by her mother. She experienced a lot of fun, new, and different things from her school and daily life in Canada. On the other hand, she also felt lonely and frustrated because of her insufficient English capability and low academic achievement. About their experiences of the life and study in Canada, Ria calls it as “survival,” Samuel and Katie say “adventure or challenge.” Through their experiences in Canada, they have been changed and shaped by the different lifestyle they encountered. To understand the life of elementary students studying abroad, it we suggest these: First, we have to consider it as the side of life or living rather than study. Second, we have to take care of students based on his/her personal and special situations. Third we have to recognize that a good education involves essential elements for education and growth of the students.
