트로이의 목마?, AI 활용교육을 위한 교육 거버넌스 구축 과정에 대한 질적 사례 연구 : 행위자-네트워크 이론(Actor-Network Theory)의 관점

국문 초록

이 글은 AI 활용교육이 그 교육적 의미와 효과가 제대로 검토되지 않은 채 학교 현장에 도입되어서는 안 된다는 상심에서 비롯되었다. 한 고등학교를 사례로 한 AI 기반 에듀테크를 적용하는 협력적 실행연구에 참여하면서 나를 포함한 연구진들은 “개별 맞춤 교육”이라는 명목 하에 학교와 교육청, 관련 기술을 제공하는 기업 등의 거버넌스 구축의 과정에 적극적으로 참여하게 되었다. 이 글은 이 과정을 행위자-네트워크 이론(actor-network theory, ANT)의 관점에서 분석하여 기술하고 그 결과를 교육학적 맥락에서 해석한 결과이다. ANT의 관점을 취함으로써 어떻게 테블릿 컴퓨터, 미래교육 담론, 그리고 AI 기술이라는 비인간 행위자들의 행위능력으로부터 이 사업의 기획과 거버넌스 구축의 과정에 이들뿐만 아니라 그 대변인으로서의 교육청, 학교, 기업의 인간 행위자들이 네트워크를 구성하는 ‘번역’의 과정을 거쳤는지를 드러냈다. 특히 나를 포함한 연구진은 이 ‘번역’의 과정에서 “개별 맞춤 교육”이라는 ‘의무통과점’을 세워 기존의 네크워크를 깨고 새로운 네트워크를 구성하려는 힘겨루기에서 책사와 같은 역할을 수행하였음이 드러났다. “개별 맞춤 교육”이라는 멋진 “목마”속에 AI 활용교육이라는 거대한 네트워크를 학교에 입성하려는 노력은 실패했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 더 이상 ‘손 안에 있음’으로서의 도구가 아닌, 인간을 ‘닦달’하는 존재인 AI 기술이 “개별 맞춤 교육”을 위한 ‘가르치는 기계’로 학교에 들어오려는 지금, 그것이 어떤 의미인지를 비판적으로 해체하고 재구성함으로써 교육담론과 실천에 개입하고자 하였다. This paper originated from my critical awareness of the problem that education using AI will only be implemented with sufficient research on its educational significance and effect in school. As a member of a research team for cooperative action research project which applied AI-based edu-tech to a high school, I constructed governance among the school, the office of education, and a company for “individually customized education.” This paper is the outcome of analyzing and describing the process of constructing governance in terms of actor-network theory and discussing the result within the context of “individually customized education” discourses. From the perspective of ANT, it is revealed how non-human actors such tablet PCs, future education discourse, and AI technology caused human actors to make plans for this research project and construct the network among human actors as their advocates and themselves. In particular, the research team including myself is revealed to have performed the role of adviser in a tug-of-war between a new network and the established one by building an “obligatory passage point“ of “individually customized education.” We have failed in introducing an enormous network of education using AI into the school with a gorgeous “wooden horse” named “individually customized education”, because of the essential limitations of AI technology in affecting low-achieving students to study. Nevertheless, in the name of future education, the government will introduce this AI technology into schools as a ‘teaching machine’ for “individually customized education” while the technology is no more a “tool” “being in hand(Zuhandelheit)” but a “suppressing(Gestell)” being. In this vein, this paper is an action to be taken in dismantling and reconstructing “individually customized education” discourses and practices for school education.
