고시원에 거주하는 청년의 사회적 교류와 정신건강에 관한 질적연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 고시원에 거주하는 청년이 급증하고 있으며 이들은 다양한 사회적 위험에 노출되어 있어 이에 대한 개입이 필요하다는 문제의식에서 시작하였다. 본 연구는 고시원에 거주하는 청년들이 경험하는 다차원적인 위기를 사회적 교류와 정신건강 차원에서 살펴보았다. 연구참여자 중 다수의 청년은 가족, 친구, 사회로부터 단절되고 있음이 나타났다. 이는 정체된 자신의 모습에 대한 비관, 고시원 자체와 고시원 이웃에 대한 낙인에서 비롯된 것이었다. 고시원 내·외부로 단절을 경험하는 청년들은 청년 지원제도의 사각지대에 있는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 일부 청년들은 다양한 지지체계를 기반으로 우울감을 해소하고 있었는데, 이들은 공통적으로 고시원 거주기간이 상대적으로 짧다는 특징이 있었다. 고시원의 고질적인 문제인 방음과 안전 문제는 청년들이 경험하는 심리·정서적 문제와 교차하며 알코올의 과다 사용, 에너지 고갈, 분노와 같은 정신건강의 위기를 유발하기도 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 고시원의 물리적 환경 개선만으로 거주 중인 청년의 정신건강상의 위기를 해소할 수 없고 사회적 단절과 고립 정도의 개선이 우선적으로 이뤄져야 함을 시사하였다. 더불어 청년지원제도의 아웃리치 기능 강화와 전달체계의 고도화를 시사하였다.

영문 초록

This study examined the multifaceted crises experienced by young Goshiwon residents from the perspectives of social interactions and mental health. Many young participants reported feeling disconnected from their families, friends, and society because of their pessimism about their self-image and the stigma associated with living in Goshiwon. These young individuals experiencing disconnection both inside and outside Goshiwon have been overlooked by youth support systems. However, some individuals managed to alleviate their depression through various support systems and had relatively shorter stays in Goshiwons. Chronic issues related to soundproofing and safety in Goshiwons intersect with the psychological and emotional issues experienced by young individuals, potentially leading to mental health crises such as excessive alcohol use, energy depletion, and anger issues. This study indicates that improving Goshiwon conditions alone is insufficient to address mental health challenges, and prioritizing the reduction of social isolation is essential. These findings also underscore the necessity of strengthening outreach efforts and youth support programs.
