민족ㆍ문화 정체성 발달이론과 한국 다문화시민교육에의 함의

국문 초록

본 연구는 다문화시민교육의 측면에서 다양한 인종, 민족, 문화적 배경을 지닌 학생들의 정체성을 연구하기 위한 새로운 방향의 모색이 필요하다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 이를 위해 미국에서 발달되어 현재에도 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있는 인종 정체성, 민족 정체성, 문화 정체성의 개념 및 이들의 발달이론들을 소개하고, 이것이 한국의 다문화시민교육의 측면에서 학생들의 정체성을 연구하는 데 줄 수 있는 함의를 탐색하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 특히 Gay, Phinney, Banks가 제시하였던 세 가지 민족·문화 정체성 발달이론 모델들을 검토한 후, 이들이 1) 정체성을 역동적으로 바라보며, 2) 정체성과 주변 환경과의 상호작용을 강조하며, 3) 소수 민족 및 문화집단에 대하여 긍정적으로 바라본다는 특징을 가지고 있다는 점을 밝혔다. 또한 민족·문화 정체성은 학생들의 학업성취, 다문화 수용성, 시민으로서의 참여와 밀접히 관련될 수 있다는 점을 들어 민족·문화 정체성 발달이론이 다문화 시민교육에서 중요하게 다루어져야 할 내용이라는 것을 강조하였다. 마지막으로, 민족·문화 정체성 발달이론이 교육과정 및 교과서, 교수-학습 방법의 개발 및 수정, 현직 및 예비교사 교육, 학생 및 공동체 이해를 위한 연구에서 어떻게 적용될 수 있을지에 대한 가능성들을 탐색한다.

영문 초록

This study introduces theories of racial, ethnic, and cultural identity development and explores their applications for multicultural citizenship education in South Korea. Three theoretical models―Gay’s ethnic identity development, Phinney’s multiethnic identity development, and Banks’ cultural identity development model―are discussed. Ethnic and cultural identity development theories consider identity development a dynamic process, emphasize the interaction between students and their surrounding environments or contexts, and view students from ethnically and culturally marginalized families in positive ways. This study also highlights the need to understand theories of ethnic and cultural identity development from the perspectives of multicultural citizenship education. The study suggests that ethnic and cultural identity development theories can contribute to the improvement of teaching and research for multicultural citizenship education in South Korea in three main ways. These approaches includes: 1) developing and revising curriculum and instruction considering students’ identity developmental stages, 2) providing preservice and in-service teachers with opportunities to reflect on their own ethnic and cultural identity development and to study that of their students, and 3) developing measures to study ethnic and cultural identity development of students from diverse backgrounds in South Korea.
